4 July 2018 Halesworth & Southwold Community News Circle 67 – Shorter Shakespeare - Macbeth

BY the pricking of my thumbs, SOMeThInG wicked this way comes... It is Macbeth, in the open-air ‘Shorter Shakespeare’ tour, with Steve Chadwick directing an adaptation by Sandy Martin MP, that was first performed by Circle 67 in 1993. Macbeth, already the shortest

of the tragedies, in this one-hour version packs almost as much of witchcraft, murder, madness and retribution as the great original itself. And you can see it all unfold from a bench in a pub garden lit (hopefully) by the late summer sun, with a pint or other refreshment in hand to moisten

the parched lips and slake the dry throat induced by the horror and the pity in the Bard’s great words, brought to life by a seasonally inspired and (only afterwards) beer-loving cast of strolling players. We are touring from the July

24th to 29th to our favourite local venues, including pubs in Bramfield, Laxfield, Dunwich and Sibton, the castle in Bungay and the common in Wenhaston. We’ll provide basic seating and admission is free. As already mentioned, our performance will last around an hour (or about the time it takes to enjoy a leisurely drink on a summer’s

evening) and as usual, we’ll pass a hat round at the end, so please give generously if you enjoy the show - the money we raise helps subsidise our full stage productions. Please see our advert for full

tour details, or visit our website, www.circle67.co.uk If Shakespeare at school put

you off, come and see if we can change your mind with a bit of fast-moving and colourful entertainment. As our name suggests, Circle

67 was formed in 1967 to bring high-quality drama to the Blyth Valley area.

OUR second Classic Car Day and Village Fete was held on Fathers’ Day, June 17th, and once again the crowds turned out and filled the green space at the hall. Loads of classic and veteran

cars looked splendid in their polished glory and were suitably adored by the attending visitors. The sun almost shone and the temperature was much more suitable than the previous year, as people could take time to wander around the cars and stalls and stop for something to eat. The hall was packed with

visitors enjoying holton Art Group’s installation picturing local scenes. We also managed to re-hang the art group’s Big Picture of the centre of the village from last year. This is now protected by Perspex so it can remain on permanent display. The kitchen team worked

their socks off supplying loads of locally prepared food, from sausage or bacon rolls in the morning, followed by quiche and salad for lunch to a huge selection of cakes and scones. never had the struggling boiler served up so much tea and coffee! All of this means we have

made an amazing profit of around £1,200 towards the cost of the new upper windows, which have

just been fitted! how’s that for timing? Without the help of the classic

car owners, the stall holders, the people who put money in our donation buckets, the artists, the tombola donors and co- ordinators, the bakers and servers in the kitchen, the bar staff, the folk who manned the buckets and assisted with the parked cars, Sam who designed and printed the posters, Mike who cut the grass, Kevin who helped with the goal posts, and the A Team who did all the planning, cajoling and preparatory work it would not have happened. To you all, an enormous ThAnK YOU. It takes a large team to produce an event of this scope and we have a great team on the Committee – and friends of great patience. Care to join us? We are having our AGM on Thursday 26th July at 7pm in the hall. Do come along and have your say; it’s your Village hall and we run it for you! We are not having a holton

Big Breakfast until Sunday 2nd September to allow for a staff break but Bingo will continue as usual: July 5th and 19th, and August 2nd, 16th and 30th all starting at 7.30pm.

PLAYGROUND HOLTON

hOLTOn Parish Council are hoping to improve and update the playground facilities within the village. The first step will be to consult and involve parents and other interested parties on what would be on a ‘wish list’ of ideas. This would be followed by formation of a Committee who would obtain costings and report back to the Parish Council. At that stage it may also require fund raising/grant application

depending upon the cost of the project. If you wish to become involved

and have some ideas, please contact elaine Day Clerk to holton Parish Council on 07867 423076 or via email edayhpc@ gmail.com in the first instance. Depending upon the level of

support and demand the Parish Council will then take this forward with the newly formed Committee.
