SUMMER BECCLES LIDO

2018 SEASON OPENS WITH A SPLASH

WhAT a fantastic facility to have! That is the first impression most people will have when they walk through the gate and see the Lido. And they would be right. This re- ally is an amazing place, and most incredible of all, there are still res- idents of Beccles that do not know it exists! Or maybe they think it’s the same tired facility that closed in 2008? Located alongside the river Waveney watching the boats go by – you really are a world away from the hustle and bustle of the busy town centre – yet it is lit- tle more than a stone’s throw! heated to 27 degrees, the 30m

swimming pool has a maximum depth of 3.5 metres and is the per- fect place to start the day with a few lengths. Or, why not work on your diving technique from the 1m springboard? To the rear of the large pool you’ll find the toddler pool, which is also heated to the same temperature.naturally, if it is 30 degrees outside you will want to dip in to cool off. But, the British weather being what it is, there is no guarantee of scorching sunshine, so it is essential the pool is heated. Around the outside of the pool you will find sun-loungers, picnic benches and plenty of grass to lay

on whilst you dry off, sun-bathe or enjoy something to eat from the café. however, it has not always been this way. Beccles Lido Limited (a not-for-profit charity) was set up in 2009 to acquire the old, neglected open air swimming pool which closed in 2008. The Directors set about fundraising so that they would be able to re-open. The chal- lenge was set and the people of Beccles got behind the new ven- ture and the combined total from donations, fundraising events and grants exceeded £200,000 and ena- bled Beccles Lido Limited to open the Lido in 2010. The model works and has done for the last eight years and every year much needed main- tenance and investment in facilities is carried out. The team are always left speech- less by the support they receive from the people of Beccles and the surrounding towns and villages. This is clearly a much loved, want- ed and needed facility. The Lido is open from late May to early September (May 26th – September 9th) and sees well over 40,000 visitors in those 15 weeks!

This year patrons will notice the brand-new toilet block. The Directors challenged the public to raise the first £10,000 towards the cost with donations and grants making up the rest of the cost. In fact, the public raised over £32,000! This year the big funding push is for a new liner for the main pool. Shaun Crowley, Chief executive of Beccles Lido Limited, knows this is a big ask, but the liner really needs doing in time for the 2019 summer season. The cost will be in excess of £100,000 and again the board of Directors are challenging the pub- lic to kickstart the fund-raising. But, this is not just about getting the money in the kitty. Shaun explains “having support from the community enables the team to demonstrate to major grant funders that the community want the pool to stay open for many years to come.” Please ask one of the team for ways to get involved or visit the Lido’s new website www.beccles- lido.com for more information on fundraising events and a link to the Lido’s virgin money giving dona- tion page uk.virginmoneygiving.

com/Team/newLiner. The hard work and fun at Beccles Lido isn’t going un-noticed. The latest fundraising push is being backed by local mermaid, Lauren Louise Rymer. Lauren says “It’s really hard to find nice pools where mermaids are welcome and I’m super happy to see the improve- ments that Beccles Lido is mak- ing.” The pool really has become a fan- tastic community venue attracting a dedicated group of lane swim- mers in the early morning, fol- lowed by families making the most of the giant inflatable in the middle of the day before more relaxed swimming and fun continues after lunch. Beccles Lido is here to be used by one and all and let’s face it, if it is good enough for a mermaid,

it must be good enough for the rest of us! The pool is open 7am – 6.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday; 7am – 8pm on Thursdays and 7.30am – 6.30pm at weekends. Pop along

and take a look for yourself or find further information and prices online at www.beccleslido.com or call 01502 714911 to speak with one of the team.

We are looking forward to a very busy July at the Walpole Old Chapel, with many musical and dramatic events planned. We start on Friday 6th July at 6pm with an event in partnership with Snape Maltings. The international ensemble, ChROMA, will be performing ‘Awakening’, a mix of ancient and modern music, featuring the renowned gamba player Liam Burns. On Saturday 7th July at 7.30pm we welcome the return of Group A, the wonderful Lowestoft based vocal performance group for 8’s-18’s. This year they are joining forces with the Camberwell Community Choir to perform a diverse programme from english folk songs to traditional South African songs. On Sunday 8th July at 3pm there will be a dramatic reading of Anne Boileau’s radio play about Martin Luther’s wife, ‘Martin and Katharina’ in which the cast will be wearing period

costume. On Sunday 15th July at 4pm the Wonderful Beast theatre company presents ‘Song Feast’, songs from around the world led by composer and accordion virtuoso Martina Schwarz. Finally, on Sunday 22nd July at 3pm we welcome back the Loki concert series. In the first of this year’s three concerts Follia perform music by Francois Couperin, and his contemporaries, in the 350th anniversary of his birth. For more details of these and

other future events please visit www.walpoleoldchapel.co.uk. If you would like to look

around the chapel, we are open throughout the summer on Saturday afternoons between 2pm and 4.30pm. The chapel is situated on

the B117 in north east Suffolk between Walpole village and halesworth. Find us at IP19 9AZ.
