Teen Shelter When the Council decided to remove the Teen Shelter it also made the decision to try to find an alternative site. With the help of teenagers from the town, a site next to the basketball court was chosen. Re-erecting the shelter took longer than was hoped for but it is now in place and in use. It is a little worse for wear and so it is planned, with the help of some shelter users, to repaint it and smarten it up. A protocol has been agreed between Suffolk County Council’s Community Group, the Police and the Town Council as to what is planned for the monitoring of the use of the shelter, the role that the various parties are expected to play and the consequences if matters get out of hand, the latter being what the Town Council sincerely hopes will not happen. The protocol; is available on the Town Council’s website. The Fire The fire above Patrick’s newsagents has been the most traumatic event in halesworth for many years, especially for those people directly involved. The Fire services and the Police performed magnificently in controlling the fire, protecting

the public and managing the crisis. Suffolk County Council and Waveney District Council officers were on site to help local businesses and residents and will continue to provide assistance. The Market Place is open for business as usual but please note there is a temporary one way system in place, vehicles leaving the Market Place must exit via Chediston Street. The Town Council will provide further updates when they are available. The Great British High

Street Awards The Town Council has decided

to enter for these awards and will be putting together an entry extolling the virtues of halesworth’s Thoroughfare and Market Place. halesworth is probably unique in having such a shopping environment, with its many independent shops offering a very wide range of wares and services, not to mention the many cafes, restaurants and pubs. Police At a recent Parishes meeting

with the Police the changing nature of policing was explained. The demands on the Police in Suffolk to deal with incidences of domestic violence, up 42%; serious sexual crimes, up 26% and 999 calls up 23% along with the enormous increase in

cyber crime has meant that the Police have had to restructure their organisation to deal with changes in priorities. Together with the squeeze on their funding this has meant that traditional policing is no longer possible. however it is not all doom and gloom, recruitment has been going well and a new Police Community engagement Officer has been appointed who is based in halesworth although his patch is very extensive. WDC’s Local Plan The Town Council has responded to WDC’s Local Plan. This plan contains many good things but The Town Council has been very critical of many aspects, particularly the impact the planned housing developments will have on the town’s infrastructure, especially on the provision of medical services and schools in the town. Also of concern is the apparent lack of understanding of the problems of surface water run-off and the impact that over 1,000 new cars will have on traffic flows in and around the town, not to mention increased parking problems. The Town Council’s response can be found on the Town Council’s website under the Planning Section.

Halesworth Ladies Walking the Walk

hALeSWORTh ladies,

Christine Jeffery and Linda hopkins, raised £2004, Walking the Walk. A big thank you for everyone

who sponsored us on the night time 26.2 miles walk, through the streets of London. Alongside 15,000 others, in Western themed fancy dress, everyone was walking to raise money for Walk the Walk, the organisation which supports breast cancer charities.

The organisation expects to

raise six million pounds from this one event. We raised £2004, which we felt

made all the hours spent pounding the lanes around halesworth and The Saints well worthwhile. We managed to complete the walk in 7.5 hours, only slowed down by traffic light crossings, it is amazing how many vehicles travel through London during the night!

Halesworth Dementia Support Project

The halesworth Dementia Support Project continues to provide information and emotional support to people affected by dementia in the halesworth and surrounding areas. The project is a partnership between Alzheimer’s Society, halesworth Dementia Carers Fund and Cutler’s hill Surgery. The Alzheimer’s Society nationwide Dementia Friends initiative has created 2.4 million Dementia Friends since it was introduced in 2013. Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small

ways people can help. From telling friends about Dementia Friends to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts. Dementia Friends sessions are around an hour long and can be facilitated for community groups, organisations and businesses. If you would like to find out

more about Dementia Friends sessions or the halesworth Dementia Support Project, please contact Jonny hawes on 07860 912458 or by email via jonathan. hawes@alzheimers.org.uk

Halesworth Gallery

The halesworth Gallery proudly presents the fourth art exhibition for 2018. This show features three

local artists, Penny hunt, Sara McLaughlin and Sara Muzira. They will be presenting their recent work in painting and print. The show runs from June 30th to July 18th. Penny hunt is a halesworth

based artist who has been working and exhibiting in the area for many years. This show is entitled “Coastlines”. Penny says of her work, ‘Paintings ranging from Seascape to Abstraction. Minimal, Meditative compositions inspired by the meeting of land, sea and sky. These compositions are made with layers of acrylic paint, considering colour, division of canvas, and emotion. It can be a long process of experimentation, trial and error, welcoming mistakes, reduction, searching for ‘rightness’, until finally a ‘balanced’ resolution is achieved.’ Sara McLaughlin will be

showing a series of paintings of local beach and industrial scenes, often both at the same time. Sara says ‘I am interested in the places where industry or ex- industry meets wildness, places of dynamic change. Old fishing equipment, the power station,

broken piers and abandoned factories are frequent subjects. I use oils, acrylics and pen and ink to create landscapes and cityscapes, often drawing on the spot in the company of my dog, and then using sketches and photos in the studio to develop my ideas. I work in hackney, London and also in Suffolk, where I am based in Wickham Market’. Sara will be demonstrating her work in the gallery on Saturday 7th July from 2pm to 5pm. Sara Muzira will be showing

her relief prints and a series of paintings. Sara’s work is often humorous and witty. ‘My work will be a mixture of print and paint. I hope to include not only work that I have already completed, such as the Red Barn Murder Series, but also new work, not yet conceived. It is the joy of making images that brings me back to art. I would hope to give visitors something to make them smile, and something to make them think. Maybe something to make them laugh.’ says Sara. halesworth Gallery, Steeple

end, halesworth, Suffolk IP19 8LL, opposite St Mary’s Church. Weekdays and Saturdays

11am - 5pm, Sundays 2 - 4pm. Admission free. 01986 873064.

Halesworth Airfield Museum

On Sunday 8th July we will be having a special event at the museum to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United States 8th Army Air Force, officially arriving at halesworth. This group was the 56th Fighter Group (Zemkes Wolfpack) and its service units, led by the renowned fighter leader, Colonel hubert Zemke. The group was made up of three squadrons, the 61st, 62nd, 63rd. A small contingent of the 62nd squadron, under the command of Major Schilling, had already started to arrive at halesworth in late June 1943. The 56th FG had been

transferred from its base at horsham St Faith, norwich. The reason for this was that the bomber escort duties of the group were enhanced as the airfield at halesworth was that much closer to the continent, thus giving the fighters more time over enemy territory to defend the heavy bombers as they carried out their bombing missions. Many of these brave young men died flying

from halesworth, in the attempt to keep so many others safe. The event will start at midday

and we will be joined by USAF personnel from Lakenheath, to lay a wreath at the 56th Fighter Group Memorial at around 2pm. We will be having a barbecue and bar and also teas, coffees and cakes for sale. We will also be joined by some military vehicles which will be of special interest. If you can make it to this

special event, you will be made most welcome and remember, admission to the museum is free. If you would like any more

information about the above event, please call Richie on 07815 441669 or 01986 835835
