Guided Walks in Halesworth
The June weather was better than usual for walks around halesworth. Four walks, in total which included stories of interesting buildings and their residents. The walk around the cemetery,
which dates back to 1855, was nearly cancelled because of the length of the grass but a word with the grass cutters and the paths were cut in the nick of time. There’s quite a story to tell about its history, and the development and style of headstones, some interesting residents as fellas the soldiers remembered here. A nature reserve and wild life haven, the cemetery is a surprise location for photographs of butterflies, wild flowers, rare black spleenwort, maidenhair fern and beautiful lichens.
halesworth has four pubs still open but we looked at many buildings and locations where there was once a pub. Some current residents know that they are living in a former pub, others have no idea. The walks were free but donations were welcomed for the restoration of a very rare wrought iron memorial, in the cemetery, which needs considerable restoration. It is in memory of Margaret henry who died in 1899. Does anyone know if there any surviving relatives? £200 has been donated this year. Town walks, Pub walks and Cemetery walks as well as talks can be arranged for groups and individuals. Contact: Janet 01986 875351 Mob: 07769644624.
News from Halesworth Bookshop
JUne has been a busy month for halesworth Bookshop. Bob Cattell, a local author, launched his second book of cricket related stories on June 1st while on Friday 8th June there was a “Ladies evening” to celebrate the Woman’s Prize for fiction. The Bookshop also supported ‘An evening with Michael Ondaatje’ at the Cut selling copies of his new book ‘Warlight’. At the end of the month we celebrated Independent Bookshop Week and had several local authors in to promote their work and for the children there was a well- attended tea party to celebrate 50 years since “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” was published. Many thanks to all who supported us during that time. Always keen to link in with local
schools and with the World Cup in mind we offered a flag bunting competition. Thank you to edgar Sewter, Laxfield and hoxne Primary School for taking part. Please do call into the bookshop and see the beautiful displays of flag bunting all around the shop, it looks wonderful. Our next event will be on Tuesday 10th July, considering the fast approaching 30th anniversary of the disaster we will be promoting ‘Baptism of Fire. Life, Death and Piper Alpha’ by Geoff Bollands. A unique personal survival account of the Piper Alpha disaster, seen from inside the control room. A talk given by Julie Gorton at 11am with an opportunity to buy copies of the book, please come and join us.
Halesworth Lions Club
SUnDAY 10th June turned out to be a glorious day and crowds of people turned out to support the Lions Carnival and Fete. It was great fun going down through the town, especially for the many children taking part in the procession. Judging the various entries was so difficult but in the end the prizes awarded were as follows: In the floats/vehicles section the first prize went to SCL Services,
and second place went to Linda Gray. In the walking section first prize went to edgar Sewter PTA and second place to A Group of Friends and their trolley Range Rovers. The overall winner of the David Patrick Shield was Prestige nursing and Care. Very many thanks go to everyone who entered – they really made it special. The Fete at the edgar
Sewter School was very well attended, with many stalls and a great programme of ring entertainment. The Lions would like to offer
their grateful thanks to all who donated items, advertised in the programme, sponsored prizes and helped in the setting up of the event. Thanks go to all family and friends who sold raffle tickets and helped on the day.
As I have said before, every
single penny raised in these Lions events goes to charitable purposes. nothing goes on administration. We are therefore very grateful to the wonderful people of halesworth and the very generous businesses who give us so much support. Thanks to you all the Lions Club can carry on with its work of helping those in need.

Wenhaston Concert
On Saturday 21st July Singout Yoxford Community Choir will give a concert in St Peter’s Church, Wenhaston starting at 7.30pm. Singout Yoxford was founded four years ago to provide opportunities for choral singing to people in Yoxford and local villages. It is a mixed choir with a wide and varied repertoire ranging from pop
to church anthems. Jazz, film and stage musical hits plus folk songs (some from South Africa) are included. The concert, called “Music
for a Summer’s evening” is in aid of St Peter’s Church. entry is free but we hope people will donate generously to help maintain this wonderful church.
Spexhall and Wissett WI
OUR speaker was Jane Bastow, from The Laburnams, St.James, South elmham. She took us through the development of her garden, from lawns and animal shelters in 1992 to the present day. The gardens are open through the national Garden Scheme in the spring, when the vast array of plants can be appreciated, Daffodils, hellebores, Camellias, not to mention the ponds, and of course the Laburnams.
