DAVID would like to say how humbled he has been with all the support, kindness and appreciation shown to him and his staff since the events of June 11th. A big thanks goes to the emergency services, who faced the challenges before them that disastrous evening, dealing with such a terrible incident that has rocked the entire community and beyond. he has been very touched by
the number of cards and letters received simply thanking him and all of his team for carrying on as business as usual. DC Patrick’s pop up shop
can now be visited behind Van Dijks Accountance at 34a, Thoroughfare in halesworth. Immense thanks are given to Peter van Dijk for offering office space to help get the show back on the road. ed the Parrot reigns supreme in his new al fresco space outside
the shop and now you can hear him from afar! The concern for ed alone was incredible and everyone was relieved he was rescued along with the computers. The rest is history. David mentions that the loss
of vouchers for papers was a daunting task to resolve, but thanks the public for their patience, and thanks Sylvia and Angela in the shop for their time and hard work in getting back to normal. “I couldn’t have come back
from the events of that night without my fantastic loyal team of drivers, delivery staff, shop staff, friends and all of you that gave me the support I needed. Thank you”. “I wish everyone else that
has suffered from these events good luck in going forward and hope that they are able to rebuild their lives and businesses accordingly”.
Halesworth Fire Service
On behalf of all the fire crews that attended the devastating fire that occurred on Monday 11th June in halesworth, I would like to express our sincere thanks to all at the Angel hotel who supplied us with hot drinks and refreshments through what was an extremely hard, tiring and long night. We would also like to thank all at Spar, The Boarding house and Durrants who kindly supplied refreshment to the crews the following day, if I have missed any others that supported us while we were there I apologise but it was hard to keep track of where it was coming from. Also many thanks to the many people who have spoken to some of us after the fire to pass on
their thanks and to commend us for doing a great job of stopping the fire from spreading further than it did. We were all there to do the
job we do, but these acts and words of kindness are very much appreciated and make us feel proud to support and help protect the places we live. I have heard many stories about the offers of help and support that have been given to all those who have been affected by this fire and it is good to know that when something like this happens the people of our town can still pull together to help and support each other. The recent fire at 29 Market Place has created much interest and prompted many questions about the shop and what it was used for in days gone by. From information I have, I find that in 1862 it was occupied by the Gostling family who established a chemist shop there. It was still occupied in 1906 by John henry Gostling who was trading from there as a pharmaceutical chemist advertising neuralgia Mixture at one shilling a bottle and Liver Mixture. In 1910 Arthur T Gostling was advertising “Lung Tonic 1/- size for 71/2d” . By 1916 it was still occupied by Mrs Gostling it being likely that Mr Gostling went to the war. By the late 1920’s the business had come into the ownership of Mr James Pe Keeble who with Mr WJ everett at 50, The Thoroughfare, were the only chemists in halesworth for most of the first half of the 20th century. Mr Keeble married Miss Boast, his housekeeper, and they had one daughter, Jill. he died early in WW2 and the business was carried on by his wife who employed a Mr Read to help her run it. In January 1940 Mr Wilfrid M George took over Mr everett’s business in the Thoroughfare and in the autumn of 1954 he acquired the business at 29 Market Place
after which it was run as a store and dispensing chemist by his son Wilfrid S George, under the title WM George & Son. his other son Peter and his wife occupied the first floor which they converted to a flat making extensive improvements. Two separate companies
were formed by the George family trading as Paranol in the Thoroughfare and Shardalows in the Market Place and these and the properties were sold to the current owner in 1978. The late Mr C Patrick and his wife moved into no 29 Market Place and the shop has been run as a newsagents by their son David for several years. I think that it can safely be assumed, from a photograph I have, that originally (300- 400 years ago) it was part of the adjoining Mansion house when it was the home of Lord of the Manor. Like other stately homes built around that time, considerable space was needed for the domestic arrangements which included a cellar or basement used to store the ale and wines and some perishable foodstuffs. In addition kitchen facilities and accommodation for live-in servants and staff were also needed.
Derek Newby Hunky Dory June 2018
hUnKY Dory has been wiped out due to the senseless arson attack on our lovely row of businesses in the Market Place. The turbulence caused to our happy band of vintage traders has been hard to bear. Most of us watched our pretty shop go up in smoke, helpless and traumatised. It’s is not just the material value, but the hunt we had to fill our store with retro wonders. Once sourced and purchased, our quirky goods are restored, cleaned and lovingly brought up to a standard suitable to sell on. A tragedy and so sad to see the decimated buildings in this historic part of halesworth.
hunky Dory are anxious to continue trading in the town where we started almost five years ago above Tilly’s, but suitable alternative premises are proving hard to find. Please find us on Facebook, visit our website

For Pinky’s Cafe - A Letter of Sympathy & Gratitude
The recent dreadful fire in halesworth’s Market Square is a cause of great shock to friends and associates of the five enterprises affected by loss of property, stock, earnings and livelihoods. Pinky’s Cafe has been home to Cafe Poets for more than fourteen years. During that time the Cafe’s proprietors, Annie and helen played a major part in the intellectual and artistic life of our town. Poets have been flocking to Pinky’s from as far apart as essex, norfolk, Yorkshire, and even Bulgaria. Because of the lasting popularity of these Poets Meetings, no fewer than five other Poetry Cafes have sprung up in Sudbury, Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Ipswich and Stowmarket. But the most popular of these
was always Pinky’s Cafe. The warm and relaxed atmosphere of welcome that prevailed in our meetings was the key to its success. Poets of whatever stripe,

Special credit to David Patrick and staff in getting all of their papers delivered the very next day. Incredible.
We must now look to the future and rebuild all that has been lost, not only the historic building, but also to those individuals affected most, in the knowledge that everybody is behind them in their recovery.

felt confident enough to get on their feet and to offer, publicly, the hard won fruits of their solitary musings. There was an atmosphere of respect for people and poetry. The Pinky’s Staff and support team helped to generate that atmosphere. Attendances grew over the fourteen years, and so did the quality of the poetry we heard. Poets came, listened and learned lessons from each other. Small miracles and mysteries became regular events. Annie, helen and the Pinky’s team, we are devastated at these tragic events, and as well as sharing our sympathy, we also wish to pay tribute to the special part you played in enhancing the quality of life in halesworth. Halesworth U3A: From the Cam to the Zambezi. Not once but TWICE!
JUne saw our monthly ‘open to all’ event see a new departure from our usual talk or locally based social event. A quickly sold out coach had members spending a warm summer’s day in Cambridge. For our July ‘open to all’ meeting we return once again to The Cut on Tuesday 17th July when at 2.30pm there will be an illustrated talk by Tony Schur following his recent book entitled ‘From the Cam to the Zambezi’. Tony returned to Zambia in 2013 having served there in the colonial service prior to independence. Tony lives in Suffolk and is a member of his local U3A. As usual there is no charge for U3A
members, all others are most welcome to join us for just £3. Tickets are available on the door or in advance from The Cut. Brief details of our programme
of ‘open to all’ talks and planned events for the coming months are available on the U3A website, along with details and how to make contact regarding the many interest groups now meeting locally. If you are online just go to ‘
halesworthu3a.org.uk’ or simply search ‘halesworth U3A’. Membership application forms can also be downloaded from the website. If you would like to make
contact either look on the website or perhaps attend our next new
and potential members face to face hour at The Cut Café on Friday 27th July from 11am until noon, when some of our longer standing members will be able to tell you more about what halesworth U3A has to offer. Membership of £15 a year provides free entrance to our monthly talks together with the opportunity to join many of the 30 or so self-running members interest groups. As always, U3A members strive to continue to ‘Live, Learn, laugh’ while enjoying each other’s company and sharing their common skills and interests.
Martin Stevens for Halesworth and District U3A The Race for The Racehorse
A GROUP of us in Westhall Village are trying to re-open the local pub, The Racehorse. This is the vision for what we want to achieve. We want a Pub which, together
with the Village hall, Church and Tony’s Stores, provides a rich and varied community for Westhall and the surrounding villages. The pub had not made a profit
in recent times. having done research, we believe it can be made a success as a Community Pub, under the banner of a Community Benefit Society (CBS). Pubs all over the country have successfully re-opened in this way. Through the Plunkett Foundation (who support similar enterprises) we are setting up The Westhall Community Pub Society, whose aim will be to purchase, open and run the pub. Our vision is that The
Racehorse will be bought by the community, run by the community, for the benefit of the community. The Westhall Community Pub
Society will have rules, defining a shares scheme that everyone in
the village and surrounding area can buy into to become members of the society. This will provide voting rights at meetings to set up and continue the running of the pub, on the basis of one vote per member. Members can also stand for election to the Committee. We will also seek grants and loans to ensure we reach our target. We want the pub to sell good
quality beer and other drinks as well as a menu of quality pub food at a reasonable price. We also hope to provide other facilities so that every section of the community can benefit, for example a café. We envisage special nights, eg curry nights. We want the pub to be for
the benefit of every part of the community. For example, helping those who have difficulty getting out to join us at the pub. And any profits from the enterprise will be fed back into the community to fund other facilities. We have a target to open in the
spring of 2019. We may find it appropriate to open part time at the beginning, but the aim is to open seven days a week as soon
as we can. We have two dates before
opening. We plan to hold a Community Barbecue in July, with the opportunity to ask questions about the plans, also a Public Meeting in September, to announce the Shares Offer. This vision requires two
important commitments from all of us, whether or not you buy shares. The first is a commitment to volunteer to help get the pub open and then running successfully. The second is a commitment to use the pub once it is open. We think Westhall and the
surroundings will be a much better village with a local pub run by the community. At the end of the day though, success will depend on the readiness of people to commit. Do you want The Racehorse to open again? Join us at the barbecue on
Westhall Village Green Sunday 8th July and then at the Shares meeting in the village hall in September. (See our website, westhallpub. com for more details).
