18 July 2018 Halesworth & Southwold Community News THANK YOU
JeAn and Trevor Peck would like to thank all of you who attended their Golden Wedding Anniversary Party and made it such a special occasion for us and our family. We also thank you for the unexpected gifts and our massive appreciation to all who donated
to the halesworth Community nursing Fund which amount to the grand sum of £640. Lastly, a special thank you to the staff of the halesworth Golf Club who on the night looked after us with great personal and professional attention.
News from the Alfred Corry Lifeboat Museum
I RePORTeD in my last piece that we had finally received our draft lease for the extension. As a Trustee I have had to read it, all 45 pages of A4 paper, plus a further three pages of comments by our Solicitor. It was in June 2017 that I exclaimed eureka, for we had just learned that we had received planning permission for our proposed extension; all this bumph for a few square feet of additional space at the landward end of the Museum! There has been much critical comment in the national press of the whole planning procedure which needs to be updated. We all welcome proper planning legislation but procedural delays like this are completely unacceptable. But, as I said last month, we remain ever optimistic! What we need are a few of the famous Churchill yellow stickers: ACTIOn ThIS DAY.
Meanwhile the season progresses, we have just passed the longest day of the year. As the famous words in a norfolk churchyard remind us ‘and older as I daily grew, time flew, soon I shall find in travelling on, time gone’. In that vein I hope this little incident will cheer you up. A few days ago the steward on duty noticed an elderly visitor standing motionless just inside the door of the museum: he approached him fearing that he might be unwell, but he said he was a former member of the crew of Cromer lifeboat and, for many
years, was responsible for day to day repairs and maintenance of the Cromer lifeboat: he was just standing ‘back home’ in the old shed on the very spot where his work bench had stood, remembering those times. What memories must have come flooding back! It was a very great pleasure indeed to welcome Roger Frost back to his spiritual home: he still lives in Cromer. We wish him well. Finally, it is my sad duty
to report that Jonathan hunt, Chairman of the Trust, is standing down due to family health problems. But I am happy to report that Steven Baird, a fellow trustee, will pick up the mantle of Chairman. We owe Jonathan a very great deal; he took over at a turbulent time and has steered the Alfred Corry into calmer waters. I am very happy to say that he will continue to work ‘hands on’ as a steward in the Museum, dealing with the day to day running, the organisation of special events and school visits, so we shall still have the benefit of his drive and enthusiasm. So, in thanking Jonathan hunt for all he has done we extend a very warm welcome to Steven Baird and assure him of our total loyalty as we move from talking/ planning for our extension, to it being converted into reality. Ave atque vale!

The Attic@Walpole
STUDenTS from The Attic Pupil Referral Unit made £65.35 for Marie Curie as part of their fund-raising; making and selling hanging baskets filled with home grown petunias, lobelia and geraniums. They set up outside the Angel in halesworth on market day, quickly drawing people to the stall with the beautiful blooming flowers. The young people were keen
to support Marie Curie as they recognised that most families are affected by cancer. In total they have raised over £1000 this year, donating the money to various charities including Children in need and Autism UK; as
well as feeding the homeless in norwich on a regular basis. Their compassion for helping others’ demonstrates how they are turning into positive citizens who want to make a real difference. Attic@Walpole specialises
working with young people with Social, emotional and Mental health problems (SeMh). It is a beautiful and peaceful site positioned in a rural location near to halesworth. The aim is to ensure that each student receives an appropriate education in a stable learning environment; maintaining the curriculum standards for each young person according to their needs,
interests, aptitudes and stages of development. We offer a provision which is
highly creative and innovative; using the land attached to the school to offer land based and enterprise qualifications (we have a garden therapist who assists with this program). We also specialise in the arts’ and offer qualifications in a range of disciplines. We tap into the rich source of local providers, employers, artists and venues in order to enrich our curriculum and ignite our students in developing a passion and curiosity for learning. Sally Erb

and is run on a shoe string. It owns three trucks, a 40 ton articulated truck, currently garaged near Colchester courtesy of a local farmer, who lends them a barn, and two 7.5 ton trucks which are garaged in an open barn at Ingatestone hall, by very kind permission of Lord Petre. On seven occasions in 2017 (yes, seven!) diesel fuel worth many hundreds of pounds was stolen from the trucks, in spite of sophisticated security measures, so they are now parked so close together that it is impossible for anyone to gain access to the fuel tanks. The charity also has a ship’s container for use as a warehouse. Aid comes from many sources but mainly from personal gifts (such as yours), other charities, and corporate donors. every time Charles and Bev come to see us they return with their car ‘loaded to the gunnels’: they take your donations to the trucks where a group of local ladies sort them before storing them in the trucks or the container. Thus the vehicles are slowly prepared for the next convoy. The bulk donations are taken to near Bristol, where another friendly farmer has lent them a barn as a warehouse. Then the paperwork has to be
done: every item has to be listed on the trucks’ cargo manifests, for the benefit of Customs posts inside and outside the eU; insurance has to be arranged for the vehicles; necessary permits obtained; drivers have to be
identified for the vehicles – they come from right across the UK - and arrangements made for the vehicles to be collected, serviced and refuelled, and then loaded: and loading a 40 ton articulated truck is not a five minute job! Then those volunteers (‘flyers’ or ‘convoyers’) who will fly out and meet the trucks on arrival have to be identified, air line tickets booked, and cheap hotel accommodation arranged. Charles has been doing this for over 21 years and knows the ropes, but it still takes an awful lot of time, effort...……..and patience!
Meanwhile the plight of the refugees deteriorates. During the week May 2nd – 8th a further 598 arrived on Lesbos, and a further 321 on Chios (UnhCR figures). At the same time 252 asylum seekers were processed and departed from Lesbos to the mainland. Is it any wonder that nerves in the main holding ‘camp’ are at breaking point with different ethnic groups fighting among themselves? As I write this a row has broken out between Malta and Italy over who should accept a further 629 souls, including 11 pregnant women and more than 100 children, rescued in the Mediterranean whilst fleeing from Libya – and several drowned! But the world is just not interested: we are obsessed with Brexit, and have to contend with the disgraceful bullying tactics of the President of the USA in his determination to put America first! Where are the political leaders who will put mankind first!? Thanks be to God for the many charities and individuals of all races and faiths, who remember that these people are our brothers and sisters.
