26 July 2018 Halesworth & Southwold Community News DERRICK E. W. BEARD (11 October 1921 - 3 June 2018)

DeRRICK Beard has died at the age of 96. Although his final illness kept him in hospital for nine weeks, until that time he had enjoyed exceptionally good health - his last stay in a hospital had been in Alexandria, egypt, in 1942 - and was a very active man. he was a familiar face around halesworth, buying his hovis loaf from the bakery, his papers from Patrick’s, getting his hair cut at Kelvin’s Barbers, and taking Sunday lunch with Pam at edwards Restaurant. he regularly ordered fish and chips at Seashell, and patronised local roadside farm stalls offering eggs and apples. In his 97th year Derrick still drove his car, and cared for his wife Pamela at home, doing the shopping, cooking, gardening and washing, still enjoying a swim at Leiston baths, and occasionally cycling for exercise. Although Derrick had lived

in halesworth only since 1997, he had a long association with the area. his wife Pamela was

born and brought up in Reydon, where her father Mr W. J. Fisk was a Porter on the Southwold Railway at Southwold Station, and her brother Richard Fisk was a well-known postman. Derrick came from Oxfordshire and after meeting Pamela in 1946 and marrying in Southwold Church in 1949, he and his wife brought up their family in Thame, near Oxford. But summer holidays with the children were always spent on the campsite beside the harbour at Southwold. Derrick loved to swim in the sea, and in retirement he and Pamela made the decision to move east, where Pamela still had three brothers and many cousins living. Pamela’s mother (nee Cotton) had been brought up in halesworth, and the town was an obvious choice as it provided for all their needs - nearby surgery and hospital, good local shops and societies, and they also found a spiritual home amongst the small but loyal congregation of All Saints’ Church at Blyford. Derrick and Pamela loved to

travel around the area, often to find a pleasant pub for lunch, or to visit fetes and fairs, and flower festivals - particularly those at Blyford and holton St Peter churches. Dad used to cycle a lot and could be seen most mornings on the road out to Walpole, from where he returned via the Bramfield Road. A few years ago, in his late 80s, Derrick took part in more than one of the historic Suffolk Churches sponsored cycle rides, when he managed to reach as many churches as some

much younger cyclists. Derrick and Pam were regulars

at the Day Centre, taking many a lunch there and making many friends. Derrick, a member of the British Legion, also attended the Armistice Day Parades. As a young man he had served in the Royal Signals as a dispatch rider in north Africa and in Syria, Lebanon from 1941-1946. Derrick and Pamela brought

up four children in Oxfordshire; and in recent years enjoyed visits from grandchildren, great- grandchildren and, back in April, from great-great-granddaughter, baby Thea, who was taken to see Derrick in the James Paget hospital. Despite working for many

years in the motor industry - he was a test driver at Cowley works - Derrick had a life-long love of horses and racing. In his teenage years he embarked upon a career as a jockey. The War put an end to that, but he maintained his interest, and managed to do a lot of riding in later life. In the last few years Derrick was taken to the racing at newmarket a number of times, his last visit there being in October 2017. My mother Pamela, and

Derrick’s family wish sincerely to thank all those who have expressed their sadness at his death, who have said such lovely things about him, and those who have sent messages of sympathy and condolence. Derrick enjoyed his retirement in halesworth, and will no doubt be missed and, I hope, long remembered. Graham Beard (Son)
