Research firm inspires future employees


Its work takes place at the cutting edge of science and engineering and every year, Derbyshire chemical research company Lubrizol takes time out to inspire new talent by giving them a glimpse of what it’s like to work for a genuine world leader. This year, the company has given


around 30 undergraduates a sought-after place on its annual placement scheme, allocating various roles across the laboratories, workshops and offices at its base in Hazelwood, near Belper. Hazelwood is one part of


Lubrizol’s global operation, which develops and sells a wide host of chemicals designed to improve its customers’ products. At Hazelwood, the focus is on


the US-owned company’s fuel additives research programme, which aims to create products that


will improve the performance of a new generation of motor engines. You might imagine that given the


highly specialised nature of Lubrizol’s business, callow undergraduates would be given minor roles, but not a bit of it. The company prides itself on challenging its students, putting them to work helping to create new molecules, market its products and help recruit the Lubrizol employees of tomorrow. Among those working on the


current placement programme is Fiona Farquharson, who has taken a year out of her three-year International Business Management degree course to become Lubrizol’s global communications and business support student. Fiona helps share ideas, news


and practice across the whole of Lubrizol, which has laboratories, manufacturing facilities and sales

offices based in five continents worldwide. She said: “I did a lot of research


to find out about Lubrizol because I’d never heard of the company before and when I arrived the site wasn’t what I was expecting at all. “You think a chemical company


is going to have a site with big chimneys but we’re based in the countryside and you don’t even see the buildings until you’re coming up the drive. “What pleasantly surprised me


was that I’m treated like any other member of the team and I’m


performing tasks which nobody at my university would expect me to be doing as part of my work here.” One of Fiona’s biggest projects


was devising a how-to guide for anybody taking part in trade shows, from a timetable of events to setting up the stall and booking private rooms for meetings. She added: “I’ve loved the


variety and demands placed on me while working at Lubrizol. Going back to university will be like stepping back to reality but what I’ve learned here will certainly help with my final year.”


Cliff College provides education and training with a particular focus on mission and evangelism. The College is situated on the outskirts of the village of Calver in the Peak District National Park.


Historically, Cliff was a Methodist Lay Training college. Today our student body is both lay and ordained and from a range of denominational backgrounds.


A conference centre is also situated in the grounds of the College.
