THE LAST WORD
ROB MAYO, Chamber President, on the issues that are worth talking about In fact, as of February this year, 100% of the
QUARTERLY ECONOMIC SURVEY – YOUR VIEWS ARE VITAL
The Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) for Q1 2018 is now live and I would encourage members to take the short time needed to complete this hugely important survey. In this specific survey, businesses across the
East Midlands are being asked to identify and rank their greatest concerns for the coming 12 months. The results will then help form the Chamber’s
Manifesto for Business for the year, which will be launched to MPs at Westminster in the spring. They will also shape campaigns and lobbying activity undertaken by the Chamber for the rest of the year and beyond. Analysis of the results by the University of
Leicester School of Business, the Chamber’s 2018 partner for Quarterly Economic Surveys, will ensure the direction taken by the Chamber is properly weighted to reflect local needs. QES Q1 will remain open until 12 March. To take part, visit

NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK The 11th National Apprenticeship Week (NAW 2018) runs from 5 to 9 March. It’s a week that sees both employers and apprentices come together to celebrate the success of apprenticeships and also serves the important purpose of encouraging even more people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a rewarding and successful career. The Chamber is extremely active when it
comes to apprenticeships. As well as pursuing a strong pro-skills agenda – working with both education providers, employers and key influencers and decision-makers – it does, of course, also run its own highly successful and popular apprenticeships programme. Businesses engage with Chamber
apprenticeships so regularly and with such success because the Chamber is uniquely placed to understand the needs of businesses, leading to fantastic relationships between the Chamber, employers and learners.

CSR ON THE RISE It was great to see around 100 people attend the Chamber’s recent CSR Conference, held in Nottingham. It was a morning of very interesting insights,
discussions and collaboration with some excellent keynote speakers in attendance, who explained how their specific organisations were benefiting from closer community involvement. From the engagement in the room, as well as
the Chamber’s own comprehensive research, it is very clear that there is a real and growing appetite for organisations of all sizes to partake in, and take advantage of, all the excellent opportunities corporate social responsibility brings, including the fantastic difference it can make to our local communities. The Chamber, in partnership with Ryley
Wealth Management, has produced an excellent paper - Corporate Social Responsibility Strategies in the East Midlands: Current Approaches and Future Prospects which can be viewed at

EAST MIDLANDS MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING CONFERENCE On the subject of summits and conferences, I am really looking forward to the upcoming East Midlands Manufacturing and Engineering Conference, taking place on 28 March in Nottingham. With a packed and important agenda, the day
promises to be a highly productive one, which will examine the latest thinking, policy and projections for the manufacturing sector in the East Midlands. The day of the conference marks
‘I Believe that sustainability will continue to gain traction and increase in prominence in the coming years’
one year and one day before the UK’s stated exit of the EU. You can find more information on the
conference, including how to book, in the Chamber News section of this edition and there will be further reaction in April’s magazine, which has manufacturing and Engineering as its theme.
AND FINALLY… To conclude this largely conference-themed edition of The Last Word, it seems fitting that I touch upon the Sustainability Summit, given that Sustainability has been this month’s Business Network theme. The Sustainability Summit: Improving Energy
Efficiency and Competitive Advantage, takes place on 7 March in Derby and will see some of the region’s leading organisations come together to discuss this crucial element of business and share best practice. I believe that sustainability will continue to gain traction and increase in prominence in the coming years and it is important that businesses are in tune with latest developments and understand the full extent of how sustainability can play a significant and long-lasting role for businesses of all sectors. The event is delivered in partnership with the
European Region Development Fund (ERDF), the University of Derby, Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council and, of course, the Chamber, with all of the key elements from the day reported in next month’s magazine.
All the best. Rob
