2018 is an exciting year for the Boys’ Brigade in Dunblane! We are already marking the Year of Young People 2018, designated a year of celebration by the Scottish Government and will be holding special events along with the churches in the town and, we hope, the other uniformed youth organisations. This session (2017- 18) marks the 100th Anniversary of the formation of what is now the Junior Section, which currently has 45 members in Dunblane and is going very strongly indeed! Over the session, we’ve had a number of special events to mark the important anniversary, including a party at Stirling Castle, a special church service and trips.

This year also marks the return of our famous BB Pantomime (see advert) which is entitled ‘Dickie Boy Whittington, Lord Mayor of Wimbledon’ and is coming to a stage near you (the Victoria Hall) the last weekend of February. Reviews of our previous shows - ‘The Pied Piper Fae Doune’ and ‘Ukulele Jock & The Beanstalk’ have been huge hits. If tickets haven’t already sold out by the time this article goes to print, you’ll want to be quick!

Our Company Section (for P7-S6) with 92 boys and young men, continues to have an engaging and varied program each week, with activities ranging from vaulting, badminton and cricket to mental health, cooking, fi rst aid, mechanics, camp craft and loads more. We have 32 boys currently working towards Bronze, Silver and Gold level Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, not to mention many more well on their way to their Queen’s Badge, the highest award in the BB. We are keen to recruit volunteer adults to work with this very rewarding age group. If you share the BB’s values and would like to get involved, please get in touch with our captain, Paul Christmas, on 01786 823192 or e-mail captain@dunblanebb.org.uk

In the New Year, we traditionally welcome new boys in P1-P3 to our popular Anchor Boy section, which meets on Wednesday evenings 6.15-7.15pm in the Cathedral Hall. Your boy will be made very welcome - no waiting lists! Each week, they get involved in games, arts or crafts, bible stories, drama, go on trips or have visitors and generally have a great time making new friends from diff erent schools! Contact Ally Lunan if you are interested in your son getting involved: allunan@netscape.net or 07886 216593.

This is a landmark year for our 40-strong Boys’ Brigade Band, too, as they prepare for a week-long tour of the Rhineland in Germany in August 2018. You’ll be able to hear them performing at a couple of concerts (dates to be confi rmed) in the spring as they warm up for the big event of the summer. They’ll be entering the BB Scottish Bands Contest in Glasgow and the Perthshire Music Festival, both in March. This follows on from winning a Silver Award at the regional heats of the Scottish Concert Bands Festival in December.

We continue to support Startup Stirling regularly, with a monthly collection at BB and our public events, most notably just before Christmas. We’re really grateful for the public’s support with this perhaps unfortunate, but very necessary bi-annual ‘tradition’, which empowers the boys and young men getting involved in sorting and delivering everything and helps everyone gain a better understanding of the issues that aff ect people very close to them. We’ll also be holding our very popular annual fi ve-a-side tournament in May/June at Dunblane Primary School, with the dates provisionally being Monday 28th May (P6/7), Tuesday 29th May (P4/5) and Wednesday 30th May (S1/2).
