It’s been another busy few months for us with preparations continuing as we look forward to welcoming our visitors from Likhubula to Dunblane next September. All 3 visitors have now successfully applied for their passports and we hope to be able to introduce them to you over the coming months.
Did you know that the Dunblane community currently supports 25 Bursars through their 4 years of secondary education? In Malawi, education after Primary school is not free and so often inaccessible. Our Bursary scheme covers all the essentials including tuition fees, access to textbooks and support from a local retired headteacher, a solar lamp to allow studying at night, school uniform, stationery, and a maize food parcel in January (often the leanest month). We receive regular updates on Bursar progress and send messages of support, questions, and encouragement to make the most of this opportunity and reach their full potential.
While our focus is on secondary education, we have been delighted to be able to support 3 high achieving former Bursars into further education. Christina has recently completed teacher training, Tayamika (pictured) is undertaking his fi nal year of teaching practice and Gift will complete his accountancy course imminently. We are also currently seeking out the potential for funding another former Bursar in a mechanics course.
We are very proud of all of our Bursars, and those in Likhubula who support them and ensure the success of the scheme. Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most power weapon you can use to change the world” and we support this whole heartedly!
We are always on the lookout for new and enthusiastic people to join our committee in Dunblane. If this sounds like something that would interest you, our friendly committee meets roughly once every 6 weeks and would love to hear from you!
