“Money, money, money........”

“Money makes the world go round”. Money can help solve a lot of problems: one has only to look back a few weeks to the remarkable result of the BBC’s “Children in Need” fund raising event, when over £50 million was pledged in one day. The money raised in this way helps change lives where hope has, perhaps, been lost.

Looking globally, for thirty years Rotary International has been striving with other agencies to eradicate polio. So far, Rotary International has donated $1.7 billion to the project that has helped to vaccinate 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. For each of the next three years, Rotary International has committed to raising $50 million. In support of this commitment, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate $2 for every dollar collected by Rotary Clubs. Taken together, this will provide $450 million to achieve elimination of polio worldwide by 2020. The Bridge of Allan and Dunblane Rotary Club is active in raising funds and promoting understanding of what remains to be achieved, including a successful information and fundraising exercise at the Dunblane Extravaganza.

While money is vital to these eff orts, it is also important to keep this work in the minds of people. To this end, the planting of 5,000 crocuses by primary school children in Bridge of Allan and Dunblane is an important contribution. The emergence of the purple fl owers in early Spring will be a reminder of this vital project, and the use of purple dye to indicate the children that have been inoculated.

President George Morrison, and all the members of the Club, would like to thank the local community for its support for this and all other fundraising activities. They wish everyone a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

The Club welcomes interest from potential new members. Meetings are held at the Westlands Hotel, Doune Road, Dunblane at 6.00 for 6-30pm. Anyone interested in attending should contact the Club Secretary, Iain Fraser at secretary@dunblanerotary.org.uk Tel: 01786 822751. More information can be found on the Club website: www.dunblanerotary.org.uk or the Facebook site: www.facebook.com/dunblanerotary.
