Ohne Filter, a 1991 concert that features Luther performing alongside his son Bernard; as well as many shorter clips and highlights, including a smoking performance at the 1997 WC Handy Awards, clips and interview footage with Luther. To top it all off, there’s the 88-page coffee table book written by Art Tipaldi that chronicles Alison’s story and in- cludes rare and never before seen photo- graphs. A true treasure trove of blues. . . The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has released their ultimate career retrospective, Anthology, on Capitol/Ume. The 2-CD set truly follows the band from their beginnings, with”Buy for Me the Rain” from their 1967 debut, and follows the guys all the way to their most recent re- lease, 2009’s Speed of Life, and the song “The Resurrection.” And the truth of the matter is there’s not a bad cut on the release. Band member and project organizer Jeff Hannah wanted a retrospective of not only the band’s hits and best loved songs, but also deeper cuts. There’s no doubt that Jeff achieved his goal. Included are instrumentals “Randy Lynn Rage” and “Midnight at Woody Creek,” along with great tracks like this writer’s for- mer theme song back during my radio DJ days, “Cosmic Cowboy.” “Fish Song” is in- cluded, as is “Ripplin Waters,” and songs from the great Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy LP like “Mr. Bojangles,” “Some of Shelly’s Blues,” and “House at Pooh Corner.” Great tracks like “An American Dream” recorded with pal Linda Ronstadt and “Make a Little Magic: with the late Nicolette Larson and their #1 country tune “Long Hard Road (Sharecropper’s Dream,” written by Rodney Crowell with Ricky Skaggs on fiddle and Jerry Douglas on Dobro. And then there’s the plat- inum “Fishin’ in the Dark.” There are cuts from all three Will the Circle Be Unbroken all-star releases including “Grand Ole Opry Song” with Jimmy Martin, “Tennessee Stud” with Doc Watson” and “Will the Circle Be Un- broken” featuring Mother Maybelle Carter. It’s a feast of cosmic country Americana

music to be treasured. . . Y’all remember Archie Bell & The Drells, right? Super seven- ties soul. Archie Bell is back in Houston, Texas with a rockin,’ soulful album that has some good ol’ country vibes added in. There’s Gonna Be a Showdown Again (GoldRhyme) features country star Mickey Gilley and Roy Head joining Archie for a house party that kicks off with a duet between Bell and Gilley before moving into a funky, horn laden, “Strategy,” an instant dance floor hit. Roy Head (famed singer-songwriter of Roy Head & The Traits) joins Archie Bell for a medley of his biggest hit “Treat Her Right” and “Tighten Up,” featuring outstanding bass and drums from Keith Vivens and Tyson Sheth. Funky stuff. Put on your dancin’ shoes! The whole album is filled with funk, r&b and soul. . . .

Richard Thompson – Live at Rockpalast is an incredible 3 CD and 2 DVD set (MVD) that chronicles live concerts with his band recorded in 1983 and ’84 in Germany and in France. The former Fairport Convention gui- tar hero rocks through some of his best mate- rial with the help of a great band, three of whom played with Fairport Convention as well, Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg and Dave Mat- tacks. Thompson, voted one of the best gui- tarists of all time by Rolling Stone, shines during both concerts. . .As Monty Python would say, “and now for something com-
