him play with that thumb. Sometimes he’d be picking so fast that his thumb became a blur, while his left hand was flying all over the fret board. Amazing. I want to ask you to tell us a little bit about Toy Caldwell, if you would. Toy and I had a really strong musical bond. I’m very humbled to say that. He’d really trust me musically like I trusted him. I was heavily influenced by him as well. I’ve never heard anyone play guitar the way he played guitar. I think we can all agree that he was one of the most original guitar players ever. He was a powerful and dynamic player. He always sounded like every note was the last note he was ever gonna play, and I loved that about him. We shared so much musically. The only other thing we shared was our love for the Washington Redskins. We both loved the Redskins. (Laughs)I always loved to watch the Redskins games with Toy. But back to the music. Toy was gifted. When he’d bring a song into the studio and say, “I want y’all to hear this,” it would be life E.F. Hutton. We’d all get quiet. And he was always very generous with his songs, he’d pitch ‘em out there, and we’d all contribute to the arrangement and what it would sound like. Often we would just start jamming and it would turn into what- ever it was.But if he had a specific idea, we’d all really tune into it. I mean, what can I say? An extremely talented and gifted man. And as a songwriter - amazing.

I remember when you did the first album he already had a slew of songs done, probably enough for several al- bums. Right, Right. Stuart Levine produced several of our albums, and I learned a lot from him musically too. And Tom Dowd too, certainly. But Stuart said one time, “I’ve never seen music pour out of one person like it does from Toy.” He just never stopped. The songs kept coming.

You know, that whole family was just very talented. Absolutely.

Some folks may not know that you are a Grammy winner, and it wasn’t with the Marshall Tucker Band. (Laughs) Yeah. We were nominated (for “Long Hard Ride”) but Chet Atkins won. (Laughs) It was an honor to lose to Chet. Give it to Chet! But I won a Grammy for playing with the Allman Brothers Band on “Jessica” from 2nd Set. I’m kind of number one sub for Jaimoe if he’s ill or his back is giving him a hard time. So I had the luxury of doing two tours with the Brothers- of course we’re old friends. They are dear friends. I think they are the greatest band in the world. I always thought that. I’d filled in on individual shows, but doing the book, the whole tour is a differ- ent animal. I was like a kid at Christmas. They played different songs on different nights and I was always lobbying for my favorites. I’d say, oh Gregg, I love the way you sing that song, can we do it again tonight? But it was great. And we won- I feel kind of funny saying we- they won, for best instrumental, and it just so happens I was filling in for Jaimoe on that version.

I’m sure Jaimoe would agree that you won. (Laughs) Yeah, he was the one who called to tell me.

Well Paul, it looks like our time is up. I could talk to you all day. Thank you so much for sharing some time with me and stories. I truly appreciate it. My pleasure, Michael B. Anytime buddy. •
