Gainesville High School graduate and a hometown hero who made it big and escaped the ills of his abusive childhood, at least it would seem. Everyone here from back in the day

knew of Tom, and a lot of locals knew him personally. The Heartbreakers were the house band at Dubbs for a year or so before they left for the bright lights and big city. That’s when the waitresses were topless. I had the great fortune of seeing him play in town in ‘90. My mom came along. It was a great show. Lenny Kravitz opened. Gainesville is extremely proud of its na-

tive son. There are friends and family all around. Our sheriff is his cousin. She holds totally different beliefs about legalization and such! We’re not proud of that! My stepdad went like Tom, but my

mom was there and tried to save him. It was too late before it even happened. There was no saving him by that point. Could he have saved himself, even though there was a very strong family history of heart attack deaths in his family? From what I’ve been taught, I have to say, no doubt! He didn’t eat right and

he smoked for a good bit of his life. My best friend/roommate in college

came from a family of thin people, but her dad died suddenly of a heart attack in his early 60’s. He worked hard, tended his veg- etable garden and seemed fit. He was a smoker and some of the typical East Ten- nessee diet can be artery clogging. A best friend from my elementary

school and junior high school lost her dad the same way. He seemed fit and was in a bowling league. He smoked. Are you getting the picture?! I don’t

want to hear about any more of these avoid- able deaths. I want to save everyone from themselves. PLEASE change your habits NOW!

We recently wrapped up a series on

Heart Health and Obesity on my FM radio show, Rockin’ Your Health. We’re addressing “Mental Health Awareness” now. You can hear all my past shows at Electralandproduc- tions.net. PLEASE do! It matters. YOUmat- ter!

The last topic in the Heart Health series

deals with emotions. A lot of us know what to eat, what not to eat, not to smoke, not to take harmful drugs, not to drink too much. We do it anyway! Why?! Emotions! Our reasons are our own. Life is hard. We all have scars. Es- cape is sometimes what keeps us going. But if we escape too often, we pay. We all know Keith Richards is the exception, but he too will suffer the backlash of his habits. Expen- sive blood transfusions only help so long. We’re all gonna die. Most of us don’t

know when, how or where. I don’t pretend I am any different. All the members of my im- mediate family - parents, sibling and one of my two children - have had cancer. It’s always in the back of my mind. My dad didn’t make it and suffered greatly in the process, before dying at age 48. I took care of him. I do NOT want to go that way! So, I preach and try to live by my words. I fail and I beat myself up, but I get back up and keep trying. That is all I
