What have been the greatest moments in your life, personally and also profes- sionally? The birth of my children was a bigger high than any drug. To taste the dream of every young musician via The Outlaws was a gift. To live out in the country, to love and be loved, and experience true peace of mind is today’s blessing, one I truly appreciate.

I never knew you are a cancer survivor. Tell me about the cancer, when you found out you had it and the aftermath. I am an eleven year survivor of head and neck cancer, which appeared as a tumor in the base of my tongue. I was diagnosed and treated in 2006 and give thanks to my support network and Duke University Cancer Center. It was both the most difficult and life changing event I have experienced. I refer to it as a strange gift, because it made me see this world in a way I would not have otherwise.


Tell me about your work with the UNC Hospital and its patients. There is an organization called Door to Door, founded by Joy Javits, that literally knocks on a patient’s hospital door and asks if they are in the mood for company. Artists like myself play music, read, tell stories, dance or per- form magic to bring a bit of joy and comfort if needed. Do you have any future plans music wise? I retired from ‘real work’ a couple of years ago and envisioned days on the porch singing the blues to the wheat field across the road. How- ever, I am the kind of person that takes op- portunities as they come, and my musical schedule is a busy one. We will see where this goes, it could easily include more recordings and tours. One of the things I have not learned is how to say no. •
