Clinical Psychology

I was a student at Mayfield from 2001 (Year 9) to 2006 (Year 13). Being at Mayfield laid strong foundations for my current career in Clinical Psychology by enabling me to gain a good set of GCSE, AS and A Level results and allowing me to develop into a well‐rounded individual.

It’s safe to say that I didn’t necessarily have the easiest start in life (but that’s another story!). However,

from the age of six years old, I was extremely fortunate to be provided with the opportunity to gain a good education. I truly believe that this education and meeting the people that I have along the way is what has led me to become the person I am today. Mayfield not only provided this education at secondary level, but also offered high quality pastoral care and a great range of extra-curricular activities (e.g. athletics, netball, Live Crib) and opportunities to develop as a well-rounded individual.

I believe that the opportunities and encouragement given to me whilst at my prep school and at Mayfield are a huge part of why I have chosen to go into a profession that helps others. I do this specifically by helping others to reduce their psychological distress and enhance and promote psychological wellbeing (which I will come on to describe a bit). Having said this, it was not a straightforward path to where I am now, and there was a slight detour along the way.

Even by the end of my time at Mayfield, (if I’m being completely honest) I still had no idea what it really was that I wanted to do. I particularly enjoyed Chemistry whilst at Mayfield, which was largely to do with having a fantastic teacher, and therefore decided the most logical thing to do was to go to University to read Chemistry. I therefore applied and secured a place at University of Bath to read Chemistry for Drug Discovery BSc (Hons). After a fantastic year of travelling to Hong Kong, New Zealand, Fiji and Australia I began my degree in the Autumn of 2007. I soon realised, however, that this degree and a potential career in Chemistry was not for me and decided to embark on my journey towards a career in Psychology. I remained at the University of Bath, but transferred to the Psychology BSc (Hons) degree. I went on to graduate in 2012 with a First Class Degree (picture from graduation day with my Gran).

...OPPORTUNITIES AT MAYFIELD ARE A HUGE PART OF WHY I HAVE CHOSEN TO GO INTO A PROFESSION THAT HELPS OTHERS.
