A
nother summer and time for another Old Cornelian magazine, with an impressive range of news about our network of old girls across the generations and in all walks of life. I am delighted to hear of the
ever‐increasing interaction between Mayfield and its alumnae throughout the year and in so many different guises. To the many of you who have contributed directly to the life of the school by giving a lecture, providing careers advice or internships, judging a competition or in any number of other ways, we say a heartfelt thank you. It is also very gratifying to learn that there are more Old Cornelians’ daughters and grand‐daughters coming to Mayfield, thereby reinforcing the inter‐generational relationships with the school. To those of you who have not been back to see your alma mater since you left, I would urge you to consider doing so: you can be sure of the warmest of welcomes.
We have had another busy and successful year at Mayfield, with the latest cohort of Year 13 having now left for pastures new, most of them to their first-choice universities. We are delighted with the academic achievements of the girls in the public examinations this summer and I congratulate them all along with the staff who work with such dedication and professionalism to ensure each pupil achieves to the very best of her ability. League tables are notoriously controversial, and we are the first to acknowledge that they do not produce a true reflection of the whole education a school provides, but I cannot help pointing out that our position for the first time in the top 50 Independent Schools at A Level is a record of which the Headmistress and everyone involved can be justifiably proud. In addition, the girls’ achievements in sports, the creative arts and drama, music and so much more continue to be a cause for regular celebration.
The contents of this magazine are a tribute to the huge variety of life experiences of Old Cornelians, but common throughout is the sense that OCs are socially responsible and positive members of society, who have so much to offer the world. Cornelia Connelly would indeed be proud of her legacy, and long may that continue.
With my very best wishes
Chantal Davies née Tamplin(St Leonards-Mayfield 1962-1971) Lady Davies of Stamford Chairman of Governors, Mayfield School
