SPARK

Now in its third year, we had another brilliant Easter and Summer camp at Mayfield. Amongst the hundreds of children who enjoyed the Spark camps, it was especially pleasing to welcome back so many children of Old Cornelians. Some are pictured here. This year saw the introduction of boarding to the Spark programme which was great fun and a welcome addition to the Spark programme. Old Cornelians also returned to teach at the camps and we are so proud of their invaluable input. There is a particular warmth about Spark Camps, peculiar to Mayfield, and it is always very special to see the school full of younger children enjoying all the expert teaching and facilities.

The Self Esteem Team

We welcomed Grace from the Self Esteem Team back to Mayfield in June. Grace gave a series of fascinating, energetic and interactive lectures to the girls throughout the day, which they enjoyed enormously. Staff, parents and Old Cornelians were invited to sessions after school. Grace spoke about the importance of questioning advertising. She used a shampoo advert featuring Cheryl Cole wearing a hairpiece as a brilliant example of how appearances can be deceptive. We also learned about the ‘white writing’ or small print used in advertising, and what it tells us, and we were encouraged to think more critically about what we are consuming on TV and online.

The girls were asked to think about the last time they paid someone a compliment and why. They were then split into groups depending on whether the compliment was about a skill, a personality trait, or appearance. It became clear that the reason we value our friends rarely has anything to do with appearance, but with loyalty, kindness, passion, strength and honesty. Not many of the girls originally noted these as compliments they would usually give out so they all made a pledge to do this more!

Live Crib Cream Tea

Yet another buzzing Cream Tea, saw the Courtyard full to capacity, as excited youngsters took their presents from under the tree, leaving their parents free to reminisce over delicious cakes, tea, and mulled wine. This is an event that we look forward to with anticipation each year and is always oversubscribed.

Live Crib is such an incredibly special time for all associated with Mayfield and to be able to continue to share it with our alumnae is wonderful. Seeing Old Cornelians return with their offspring, some in the lead role as baby Jesus, is heart warming for us all.

The Old Cornelian SUMMER 2017 25

We learnt a lot from Grace including how to be kind to ourselves as well as one another, how the media distorts appearances, and how this impacts what we believe to be “normal.” We will all be more wary in the future when consuming content.

Later the same month, Mayfield hosted an evening in London for primary and prep schools, at which the SET spoke about the primary/secondary transition and stresses associated with such. We were pleased to include Old Cornelians in the guest list for this illuminating event.
