Between the mid-1940s and 1996, the United States Navy operated 31 development laboratories in Warminster. These labs worked on military applications of a wide range of tech- nologies, including: flight data recorder ("black box") tech- nology; GPS; and photosensitive lenses. Among the labs at this Johnsville Naval Air Development Center was the Aviation Medical Acceleration Laboratory - the centerpiece of which was the largest and most powerful human cen- trifuge the world has ever seen, built to test the limits of the human body relative to the high acceleration generated by post-WWII fighter jets.
