Pool Man Shares Cancer Scare Story
Around 48,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and in December last year, Martin Borley, 53, from Tanby Pools, in Surrey, was one of them.
“I considered myself
fi t,” says Martin. “I swam a mile every day and cycled 50 miles regularly plus every year I cycle 300 miles in three days for the O2E (Ordinary to Extraordinary) Charity.
ABOVE: Martin Borley from Tanby Pools was one of 48,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer last year.
“I had no symptoms at all – many men do not!” It was at a routine
medical that Martin noticed his PSA test was above the normal parameter at 3.5 and pointed it out. Another test was booked for six months later at which time it was found to be 4.7.
“An MRI scan found ‘something’ that needed further checks with
a biopsy,” recalls Martin. “This confi rmed the scary news that I had prostate cancer in two places but thankfully contained within the prostate and at a Gleason level of 3.3 each.” He continues: “It’s like a punch in the gut and all sorts of emotions swirl around in your head when you hear these words, not the least, how to tell the children. “I am one of the lucky ones – I caught it early! It’s simple really – if you deny you have it, or ignore it, you are not lucky. Around 12,000 men die in the UK every year (33 a day), many of these are preventable.”
Famous men who had prostate cancer include – Nelson Mandela, Laurence Olivier, Ben Stiller, Roger Moore, Robert de Niro, and James Brown, so Martin is in good company. “I shall be wearing my moustache for Movember and I hope other guys will too,” says Martin. “Don’t be afraid to talk about it – confront prostate cancer together.”

Entrapment Theory £10m Expansion Plan
Detectives are re-examining post mortem reports to establish if the death of a 15-year-old boy in a London lido, over 40 years ago, could have been a case of entrapment.
There is a £20,000 reward on offer by the Metropolitan Police for information regarding the death of Enrico Sidoli who died in July 1976 after being pulled unconscious from the Parliament Hill Lido in Hampstead, 11 days previously.
The main investigation has centred on the young man being assaulted, thrown into the pool and deliberately held under the water. However, after receiving information on reports of entrapment, involving single main drain pools, offi cers are now checking for tell- tales signs of entrapment.
ABOVE: The expansion of the award-winning Waterworld complex will add 100 jobs to the existing 200 on site.
Waterworld Group is all set to start work on a phased £10m expansion and development plan of the Waterworld complex in Stoke-on-Trent. The expansion of the Waterworld complex will see the new build of a purpose built 60,000 sq/ft leisure development alongside the existing aqua theme park. Details of the plans will include a new M Club Spa & Fitness Club, a new trampoline park as well as new water rides and attractions.
ABOVE: Offi cers have not yet ruled out entrapment as a theory.
Charismatic British Asian leisure entrepreneur Mo Chaudry turned the previously loss-making operation into a viable and profi table business and has since established it as one of the most successful aqua theme parks in the UK. Today the hugely popular aqua theme park attracts over 400,000 visitors annually and employs 140 people. Visitor numbers to the Waterworld site are expected to exceed 3 million people and will continue to form a major part of Staffordshire’s tourism and leisure offering.
