VITAMIN K2: AN ESSENTIAL CARDIOVASCULAR SUPPORT NUTRIENT
By Dr. Katarzyna Maresz, president of the International Science and Health Foundation
A few very well publicised studies showed that calcium supplements are bad for one’s heart. This has led scores of consumers to abandon their calcium supplements out of fear that they are damaging their cardiovascular systems.
This decision is not necessarily protecting one’s heart – rather, it is putting their bone health at risk. Instead, people can confi dently continue to take their calcium supplements provided they are consuming enough Vitamin K2 daily.
Calcium is not just a bone-support nutrient – it actually plays a role in many of the body’s systems. But because our bodies do not produce calcium on their own, we need to obtain it from diet and/or supplementation. Yet too much calcium in the body left unattended can have a negative effect, such as depositing in the arteries and blood vessels causing calcifi cation. This calcifi cation causes stiffening that puts a strain on the cardiovascular system.
The solution: Vitamin K2.
How K2 Works Simply put, Vitamin K2 is the body’s light switch. It activates or “turns on” important K-dependent proteins already present in the body. Where heart health is concerned, Vitamin K2 “turns on” the matrix GLA protein (MGP) found in the arteries and blood vessels. By doing this, calcium is blocked and kept from depositing (where it can cause hardening of arteries and blockages).
There is substantial body of scientifi c evidence confi rming Vitamin K2 should be added to one’s list of essential nutrients, particularly for supporting cardiovascular health.
The most exciting clinical study was published in the journal Thrombosis and Haemostasis in 2015.1
It shows a nutritional dose
(180 mcg) of a specifi c Vitamin K2 called MenaQ7® taken daily for three years not only inhibited age-related stiffening of the artery walls, but also made signifi cant improvements in artery fl exibility – meaning calcifi cation was actually regressed, leaving arteries healthier and more fl exible.
This study is the fi rst intervention trial where the results confi rm the association made by previous population-based studies: that
vitamin K2 intake is linked to cardiovascular risk. According to the researchers, the data demonstrated that a nutritional dose of Vitamin K2 can, in fact, promote cardiovascular health.
