Going Out - Page 56 Beach Flags

Stay safe this summer Rip Currents

Rip currents are responsible for deaths on our beaches every year, and for most of

the rescues performed

by lifeguards. Beachgoers should be aware of how dangerous rip currents are, and swim only at beaches with lifeguards in the designated swimming area. Rip currents can form in any large open water area, such as low spots and breaks in sandbars, or near structures such as jetties and piers.

For your safety, be aware of the danger of rip currents and remember the following:

If there is a red flag flying on the beach do not go in the water - swimming is not allowed. A yellow flag means there is a risk of danger and you should take care, especially

if you are not a strong

swimmer. Special care should be taken by the elderly and children in these conditions. Even if a green flag is flying you should still be aware that conditions can change quickly.

- If you are caught in a rip current, stay calm and don’t fight the current. - Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Once you are free, turn and swim toward shore. - If you can’t swim to the shore, float or tread water until you are free of the rip current and then head toward shore. - If you feel you can’t make it to the shore, draw attention to yourself by waving and calling for help.

- Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist near these structures. - If someone is in trouble in the water, get help from a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is not available, have someone call 112. Throw the victim something that floats – a lifejacket, inflatable ball and yell instructions on how to escape the current. - When at the beach, check conditions before entering the water. Check to see if any warning flags are up or ask a lifeguard about water conditions, beach conditions, or any potential hazards.

We are also looking for volunteers to help us in the shop. So if you could spare a few hours a week come along and talk to the team. Avenida del Mediterráneo, 4 Teulada. Open Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm.

Trying to improve your English or Spanish? We have the answer for you!

Here at HELP Vega Baja we are keen to attract more volunteers whilst at the same time help people in the community.

We have vacancies throughout the charity for volunteers – providing advice and information, helping in the shop, sorting donations and much more…..

If you’re struggling to find work this summer and you are looking for something to fill your time, volunteering could be the ideal way to keep yourself busy, boost your CV and of course, help others in the community. If you are over 16 contact us to find out more. No upper age limits – we know from experience that us seniors have a great deal to offer!

If you are only in Spain for a few months at a time it is still possible to volunteer – we work around the hours that a volunteer can offer.

To find out more how you can help us support people in the Vega Baja area as we have for over 35 years, please contact our San Miguel Centre on 96 672 3733, or email office@helpvegabaja.com.
