Why do you need travel Insurance? The average cost for overseas medical treatment is 2,100€ but can be much higher.
For example, in one case treating multiple fractures in the USA, a British citizen was forced to take an air ambulance back to the UK.
The cost of the treatment and transport was not far off 500,000€. Insurers are increasingly having to pay more than 25,000€ on average to bring holidaymakers home - including for apparently minor injuries or ailments. Without travel insurance these costs are down to you and the Embassy of your country of residence is not likely to help you. Some travellers do not understand the potential consequences of their pre- existing medical conditions. No matter how minor you may think they are, please also make sure that you declare. For example someone who previously suffered from a heart problem or cancer may say: ‘Well if it comes back whilst I’m away, I’ll just get on a plane and come home’. This can often end in disaster and with massive bills. If you don’t declare pre-existing medical problems you might not be covered and your insurer will be within their rights not to honour the claim because you have not made a full declaration. Some minor problems are accepted with no extra cost but please always make sure to mention them at the time of contacting for a policy.
Your travel insurance is also going to cover for lost or stolen luggage, the costs of cancelling, delaying or cutting your trip short, personal liability, in case you’re sued for damaging property or causing injury. Everything you need to make sure that you can relax “tranquilo” on your holidays!
