As we get a bit older and wiser, we realise that being at least a little bit prepared is probably wise – we may have children or pets with us, we may have other peoples’ needs to consider for the journey so best to take a few things with you:-

1) Make sure you have your insurance and breakdown policy with you (and indeed that you have an idea of what you are covered for). 2) Some food and drink that would at least get you by in case you should have a problem. 3) A sensible first aid kit and any medications that are required to cover the planned length of your trip (and a bit more just in case of delays). 4) A few basic tools, a few basic spare parts for your car, some antifreeze or at least spare water, some oil and a set of jump leads. (Not a bad idea to have these in your car anyway but make sure they are up to the job – a cheap set of jump leads from your local pound shop are unlikely to be much use!) 5) If you are taking children and or pets, then enough things to occupy them on the journey such as games. It is often a good idea to take a tablet or similar so that they can watch films whilst sitting in the back – my dog particularly likes Finding Nemo - hehe.

So you have everything need, surely that’s it? In truth that is pretty much it, however you do at least need to give your car a once over. If you are not that familiar with your vehicle, get your local garage to give it a check over for you – a small cost but worth doing if you are going for a long trip. If you are familiar with your car, check all your fluid levels, check the condition of your belts, have a good look at your tyres, check for any fluid leaks, inspect the condition of brake pads and discs, chuck something good on the stereo and go for a great road trip!!

Have a great summer, stay safe and go and explore a bit of this fantastic country.
