U3A Jávea recent events Here are just some of the events that U3A Jávea members have been enjoying recently.

Robinson Crusoe comes to Jávea Members of Jávea U3A discovered the truth behind the fictional adventures of Robinson Crusoe when they attended the latest History Group lecture.

Mike Rendell, an authority on 18th century history, gave his fourth talk to the group, entitling it Castaways: The Real Stories behind Robinson Crusoe and the Mutiny on the Bounty.

Ray Edmonds A recent speaker at Javea U3A’s monthly general meeting was something of a sporting legend – and was right on cue with his audience. Former world title holder at both snooker and billiards, Ray Edmonds, entertained with stories of his days as a player and later as a BBC and ITV commentator, when he addressed U3A members at the Parador Hotel, Jávea.

Spanish Culture and Cuisine …. with a

big helping of fun! Forty-eight members of Jávea U3A’s Spanish Culture & Cuisine Group enjoyed a trip to Archena, Cehegin and El Valle Regional Park for four days and three nights of traditional Spanish food, drink and history. Organised and led by group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie, the party were treated to a host of diverse visits including an olive factory, lavender gardens, old Iberian settlements, Roman remains and cave houses as well as beautiful buildings such as churches and a grand council chamber.

Jávea U3A May Ball success More than 200 party goers enjoyed Jávea U3A’s big annual May Ball, held at Salon Canor in Teulada. This, the most prestigious event of the association’s calendar, was organised by events co-ordinator Shirley King, assisted by her band of willing helpers. The event proved a massive success, many agreeing it was one of the best Jávea U3A Balls they had attended – and it was also a big fundraiser, with a grand total of over €1,000 being collected for Make A Smile, the organisation’s charity of the year.

In search of the Northern Lights Jávea U3A’s Travellers’ Tales group were treated to a very informative and highly amusing presentation from group member Felicity Arnott when she described her and husband Bob’s trip “In search of the Northern Lights”. Oliva U3A Update

Recently, Oliva U3A held their Annual General Meeting at the Polivalent in Oliva. The meeting was opened by the President John Melville.

The President gave the assembly an update on the years activities, he reported that the membership was going from strength to strength and now stood at 534 members he also reported that there were now 42 groups running. He paid tribute to two committee members who were stepping down from their roles, these were Rosa Jones as Groups Co-ordinator and Alan Robinson the Travel Co-ordinator. Finally the President thanked the committee for their hard work during the year. Following the presentation of the accounts it was time for the election of the new management committee. As the President John Melville was not standing for re-election a new President needed to be elected along with the officers and general committee members. The Secretary Mike Dunkley advised the meeting that he had received no contested positions, following this all nominees were accepted unanimously by the assembled membership. The new President introduced each member of the new Committee Members and Officers individually to the membership. Following this he then closed the meeting wishing everyone a safe journey home. The photograph shows the new committee, from left to right seated, Robbie Gordon Treasurer, Mick Goy President, Guy Stratford Vice President and Mike Dunkley Secretary, standing from left to right are Anja Homberg Travel co-ordinator, Ron Colcombe, Peta Cole and John Melville Membership Secretary. Unfortunately due to personal reasons John Flannigan the new Group co-ordinator and David Mcfarlane, Webmaster were unable to attend the AGM.
