FF - Your healthy magazine It’s getting hot in here ...so take off all your clothes!


Living on the Costa Blanca we are used to high summer temperatures but the last few weeks have seen very high temperatures indeed. What we do need to be aware of are the health risks that such high temperatures bring, and one of these is heat exhaustion.


The symptoms of heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating and a rapid pulse, brought on by your body overheating. It is one of the three main heat-related conditions with heat cramps being the mildest, heat exhaustion being in the middle, and heatstroke being the most severe.


Heat exhaustion is caused by exposure to high temperatures, particularly when combined with high humidity, and strenuous physical activity combined with the body’s failure to cool itself. Heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke if not treated promptly, which can be life-threatening.


Fortunately however, heat exhaustion is completely preventable, and treatable; the key is to knowing the signs and symptoms which include:


- Cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat - Heavy sweating


- Faintness, dizziness or fatigue - Weak, rapid pulse


- Low blood pressure upon standing - Muscle cramps - Nausea or headache


Besides hot weather and strenuous activity, other causes of heat exhaustion often include: - Dehydration, which reduces your body’s ability to sweat and maintain a normal temperature - Alcohol use, which can affect your body’s ability to regulate your temperature - Overdressing, particularly in clothes that don’t allow sweat to evaporate easily What to do: if you are worried and think you may be suffering from heat exhaustion you should do the following: - Rest in a cool place. Getting into an air-conditioned building is best, but at the very least, find a shady spot or sit in front of a fan. Rest on your back with your legs elevated higher than your heart level. - Drink cool fluids. Stick to water or sports drinks. Don’t drink any alcoholic beverages, which can contribute to dehydration. - Try cooling measures. If possible, take a cool shower, soak in a cool bath or put towels soaked in cool water on your skin. - Loosen clothing. Remove any unnecessary clothing and make sure your clothes are lightweight and nonbinding. Call your doctor if your signs or symptoms worsen or if they don’t improve within one hour of using these treatment measures. If your body temperature reaches 104ºF (40ºC) or higher, you should seek immediate medical attention because you may need to be given intravenous (IV) fluids to help you rehydrate.
