LITTLE COOKS Strawberries Summer

Grow strawberries this summer in the garden, on the patio or even your windowsill

S

trawberries are an easy plant for little green fi ngers and can be grown almost anywhere - even on your windowsill. Strawberries can

be planted all through the year, however, the best time is between June and September when they can enjoy all the summer sun.

WINDOW BOX STRAWBERRIES

YOU WILL NEED 1 window box 1 small bag of gravel, stones or pebbles 1 bag of compost 1 strawberry plant Water

PREPARING YOUR WINDOW BOX

Tip a layer of gravel, stone or pebbles into the bottom of your window box – this will help if you accidentally give your strawberries too much water. A 3cm layer of stones will help for the water to run away.

ADD THE COMPOST

Tip compost on top of the stones and fi ll until it reaches about 5cm from the top of the window box. Get your hands dirty and press the compost down lightly – this will give you the perfect bed for your strawberry plant to sit in.

PLANTING YOUR STRAWBERRY PLANT

This time of year it’s best to use small strawberry plants rather than seeds so you can enjoy strawberries sooner. Use your hands to make a small, deep hole and place in your plant. Pat down and top with a little more compost. If planting more than one, make sure the plants are 40cm apart.

WATERING Water new plants once a day – the gravel will make sure they don’t have too much water. Try watering from the bottom as this will stop your fruit from rotting.
