‘Friluftsliv’– the Norwegian longing to be outdoors
There is something you should know about Norwegians – they deeply yearn to be outdoors. A backpack, sleeping bag, fi shing rod and tent are among a Norwegian´s basic possessions, enabling them to live fully in Norway´s outstanding nature. This passion for the outdoors has a name:
‘friluftsliv’, which can best be described as an- ything to do with outdoor living and connect- ing with Mother Nature on both a physical and spiritual level. The concept is as important to Norwegians as samba is to Brazilians, sauna to Finns and pasta to the Italians. Why? Because they are brought up to believe they will be
happier outdoors. You might say the need to be close to nature is part of the Norwegian DNA. So much so that ‘friluftsliv’ pervades all Hurtigruten activities. We want to show you what Norwegians love, and hope you will experience at least a touch of that happiness on our excursions, maybe when sitting around a campfi re, hiking a trail, or even just by enjoy- ing a cup of coff ee or tea together. We cannot guarantee good weather,
but we can guarantee a genuine Norwegian outdoor experience! We want to inspire you with that same sense of ‘friluftsliv’ when you join our expedition team. The purpose of our activities is not only about lectures and facts about local history, but the activity itself. Enjoy the sensation of being outdoors – feeling, smelling, listening and being completely in the moment.
Hurtigruten Young Explorer
Give the children a sense of what it is like to be a real explorer in Norway’s beautiful and untouched surroundings. Children aged 7-13 can take part in our complimentary Young Explorers programme along the Norwegian coast on MS Finnmarken all year.
A dedicated host on board will plan and organise all the activities, which focus on fun and eco-friendly learning, tailor-made to awaken their sense of adventure. Kids will get a deeper understanding of nature, climate and culture, and be introduced to topics related to wildlife, local food, environmental protection and famous explorers. There will be daily on-board activities for the Young Explorers, related to the diff erent topics.
