Defining childhood

Please note, for consistency we have used the term Childhood Sexual Abuse instead of Childhood Sexual Assault from this point forward in this booklet. Neither term is right or wrong - as counsellors we use the terms interchangeably depending upon a client’s preference.

sexual abuse Childhood sexual abuse is any sexual behaviour imposed on a young person under the age of 18, usually by an adult. Abuse can occur wherever there are imbalances of power. Any sexual act that takes place without the informed consent of the person or with a person under the age of consent is against the law. Sexual abuse is an abuse of power and trust. The abuser employs deliberate and premeditated behaviours to trick and coerce children and young people.

Sexual abuse is a criminal act and an abuse of power for which the perpetrator is 100% responsible. It is understood to affect up to 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men [Fergusson & Mullen (1999)]. The effects of childhood sexual abuse can be compounded and may not arise or be understood until adulthood.
