Seeking justice

A question which can often be asked is “Should I report my experience of sexual abuse to the police?”

It is important to remember that sexual abuse is a crime; you have a right to make a report to the police, no matter how long ago the abuse may have occurred. You may also have strong reasons for not following this path.

In deciding if and when to talk to the police, it might be helpful to consider the timing of this step. Think about your current readiness and how you are coping in daily life as well as your access to personal and professional supports.

“I expected closure but my healing journey ended up being separate to the legal path.

I do want him to face what he did.” Samsara 30 years

“I want to take legal action, because I want him to take responsibility for what he did. But most of all I want that little 4 year old girl to have a voice.”

Melissa, 19 years
