For Parents

I found out my child was sexually abused

When parents discover that their child has been sexually abused, they experience a range of emotions, including anger, guilt, confusion and grief.

Their first reaction is often shock. They don’t want to believe this could happen to their child or that someone they know or love would ever sexually abuse any child. Parents’ reactions can also be compounded when the disclosure of abuse involves a perpetrator who is a partner or ex-partner, relative or family friend. It can be very difficult to stay steady and calm at such a time, particularly if the allegations of abuse are being investigated by police or other professionals.

Regardless of the particular circumstances it is very important for parents to get support for their own feelings and reactions so that they can respond appropriately to their child’s needs. There are many ways they can help and comfort their child as they deal with their experience.
