BEHIND Cutlers Hill Surgery we are in the process of clearing the site prior to building the Information and Support Centre. On the site is a beautiful mature pear tree - the Information and Support Centre will be known as The Pear Tree Centre. The Centre will serve North Suffolk and South Norfolk incl the towns of
Harleston, Southwold,
Halesworth, Stradbroke, Bungay, Beccles, Saxmundham,
Leiston and Framlingham. The Pear Tree Centre will be for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer or any other life limiting illness, as well as their friends and carers. It will be easy to access and provide a range of supportive services. The building is designed to be welcoming but with areas of quiet and privacy. The services will include help and support with understanding a diagnosis, financial and benefits advice, bereavement support, children and family support services, complementary treatments and sign posting to other agencies. It will be an oasis of calm with a positive and friendly atmosphere, where people and their families and carers can relax, share their anxieties and get clear answers to any questions they may have. The Pear Tree Centre will also act as a venue for other organisations to meet, such as the Alzheimer’s support groups and Parkinson’s support group. To avoid any confusion the
Pear Tree Centre will not have any clinical facilities or beds; those will be provided by the Nursing Home which is to be built on the Campus Site.
Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund While we have reached our
target of funding to build the Pear Tree Centre, the running costs of the Centre will still need funding and we still need to continue raising money to provide extra care and support for Cutlers Hill patients who wish to die at home. The Trustees have been very touched by the generosity of the local population. Your support by making individual donations, nominating the HCNCF for donations in memory of their loved ones and holding events is the life blood of the charity. It also raises our profile and spreads the word about our work. Thank you.
Dot Booley held a cake and
coffee morning in December which raised £600, Chris and Francesca Buttle’s Tea Party donated £165, and the Co-op café ran a cake and raffle which raised £146. The Masonic Lodge Prince of Wales No 959 donated £230 and the U3A donated £100. Wenhaston Methodist Church donated £60 raised in lieu of sending Christmas cards. The Prudence Masonic Lodge of Halesworth donated £200. The Halesworth Lions donated £1000. Community Action Suffolk donated £25. Blyford PCC donated £50. Ted Edwards donated the fees of £75 for auditing the accounts for Bramfield Village Hall and Bob Stephenson donated £200 that he took selling Christmas greenery. Norton and Peskett ran a will scheme which raised £550 in total.
Halesworth Golf Club has also been an enormous support. At various events over last year
HALESWORTH DAY CENTRE
MARCH was a busy month at the Day Centre, new members have been welcomed, and our new volunteers bedded in nicely. It is also the time when our three yearly staff checks etc are due for renewal.
All those responsible (14) have completed their update of the Food and Hygiene requirements, repeat CRB and new forms (12) submitted and several Blue Badge and Attendance Allowance forms have been completed.
It has put pressure on our Officers ensuring all the relevant administrative details have been applied and completed and we thank everyone for their support in this important aspect of our work. We have now taken on

their men’s captain Ian Stannard and ladies’ captain Sally McCoy raised £2,112.35 and they all supported the HCNCF charity golf day in September which raised over £4,000, bringing the total to £6112.35. The Trustees are very grateful to them and Ben Townsend, the HGC manager, for their continued enthusiastic support.
The HCNCF has received donations in memory of John Aldrich,
John Bonner, David
Copeman, and June Haddy. Our thanks go to all their friends and relatives who have been so generous.
Individual donations have been received from Dr Julian Sanger, Caryl Coomer, Iris Baker, and Val Rutterford. Helen Bishop, Helen Seal, Patrick Gillard and Marion Glaze have donated via My Donate. The Trustees would like to thank all of you.
The 50/50 club continues to thrive. In January the winners were Rosemary Thomas, Dot Booley and Michael Webb. February’s winners were Elizabeth Maulden, Alan Witherby and Ann Farnfield. We are holding our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 26th April, 2.30pm in the Garden Room at Patrick Stead Hospital. Halesworth Area Community Bus
APOLOGIES to our readers and passengers for not being in print during March, but we are still very operational!! Firstly, we have to thank the Co-op here in Halesworth for offering to sponsor us for the next year, without help from local businesses the Hoppa would struggle to keep going as we receive no local authority or national funding. Keep an eye on the press as there will be more news to come about this. To add to the Co-op’s generosity we offer our thanks to Dave Pring and the team of Old Glory Molly Dancers and Musicians for their generous donation of £250.
Also to Diane and Karl Gorman of Beccles who donated a super-light wheelchair for our use on the buses. This will be an asset to us, not only for helping with the Day Centre but also for our drivers’ accessible training. Secondly, thanks to our loyal team of volunteer drivers for keeping the
wheels turning,
and to our passengers for using us. This brings me to the very important point of more passengers. HACT is a registered bus service like the Anglian, except we cover Halesworth and Holton for local people Monday to Friday am and pm. (Except Thursdays our maintenance day). Most of our passengers are pensioners, who use our service on a regular basis. Our service was set up many, many years ago, so folk could shop, use the library, post office, surgery, and other local services.
BEECH HOUSE NEWS
WE apologise for not submitting a report for the Community News lately, but here is a recap on what has been happening and what is to come. We all enjoyed a lovely St Valentine’s Day where we had a singer for the afternoon. Thank you to Chrissie for coming in and singing for us, we all really enjoyed this and you have a fabulous voice! We celebrated St David and
had a Welsh day. Some baking of Welsh
products was done
and instead of pin the tail on the donkey we played pin the tail on the sheep, which our residents seemed to enjoy and laughter could be heard all around! We celebrated St Patrick's Day with a quiz and watching the river dance and enjoying a tipple of Guinness or two. Also for Mother’s Day, our female residents were invited to afternoon tea and a pamper afternoon for footspas, facials and manicures whilst having tea, cake and a chat.
Easter is coming up so our residents are busy making decorations for this and planning what they are going to put on their Easter bonnets.
Some residents have been doing a lot of baking which has been lovely and they have really enjoyed this, especially the sampling of them after! We will be doing another cake stall in the Thoroughfare very soon, the date is to be arranged. Anyone who may have some
unwanted wellington boots, please feel free to donate them to Beech House for a garden project we are doing.
Birthday greetings this month
go to Grace, Molly R, Alfie and Ted.

HALESWORTH & SOUTHWOLD COMMUNITY NEWS
We at HACT would like to see more local folk, of all ages on our buses, sadly, it is a fact that some of our regulars have passed on or are now in care. To keep our wheels turning for the future, how about trying our 511 service for your local shopping, we have volunteer bus buddies to help you with your shopping if you need it, it is an hourly service, calling at all the necessary locations. Each bus has 16 comfortable seats, complete with seat belts. Bus buddies will help you with these if required. Bus passes are accepted, and timetables are on the bus or call in at our office at the rail station.
This would mean you would not need to get the car out of the garage, save on fuel for more important journeys, and not need to find a car parking space. By the way, our buses are for passengers of all ages from the cradle upwards. I did a private hire this week taking schoolchildren from one school to another, they were very excited to be on a bus, AND remembered their seatbelts! If for some reason you need picking up at your home, just give us a call on 01986 875900 prior to your journey, and you will be added to the drivers ‘day sheet’. Please be ready at your time of pick up.
