From 1865 – 1885 he was director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, succeeding his father, William Jackson Hooker .Joseph had a doctorate in medicine and outstanding botanical and geological knowledge. He was an intrepid walker and climber, a skilled writer, artist, a surveyor, cartographer,
recording air
pressure, humidity, altitude. His records and collection of thousands of plants now at Kew, particularly the distinctive Island flora and fauna were of significant importance to Darwin whose theory of evolution Hooker championed.

HALESWORTH in Bloom have received an Award and £5000 from Suffolk Foundation for our Town Park. The money comes from the Council’s Working Together Community Fund which is an awards programme open to Suffolk’s voluntary and community organisations. The programme is managed by Suffolk Community Foundation with the objective of recognising outstanding service delivery or community activity as a result of increased collaborative working.
