Halesworth Festival Voices’
HALESWORTH Festival Voices, is currently very much in need of more singers (for all parts). We already have an excellent conductor. Phillip Simms, a professional musician who, besides his role as musical director of the renowned Tallis Chamber Choir, also plays double bass and keyboards. We also enjoy the services of a first class piano accompanist, Terry Cannane. However a dearth of singers is now a major concern, so much so that we were obliged to withdraw from last year’s Halesworth Festival. We do not perform just major “classical” works; previous programmes have
often been
built around a particular theme, eg two years ago, the coming of spring, which provided the opportunity to include folk songs, madrigals etc, and on

another occasion we celebrated the power and magnificence of the sea, with music such as Stanford’s Songs of the Sea, and Elgar’s Sea Pictures plus sea shanties and the like.
Our Christmas concerts have also been very varied in content, including traditional carols, major works such as RVW’s Ceremony of carols, and on one occasion a medley of popular Christmas themed songs. Our concert of last December centred round a contemporary work by Bob Chilcott, “Wenceslas”. Harvey Rathbone played the King very convincingly and Philip’s wife, Lizzie, gallantly took on the role of the heroic page. Terry, our pianist, was, as ever, invaluable. Praise must also go to Emma Parsons. who delivered a delightful selection of readings expressing the Joy
on March 2nd, kicking off at 9.15am with a whole school ‘Drop Everything and Read’ event. Pupils brought in their reading books from home, took out new ones from the library and put down their pens for an enjoyable fifteen minutes of silent reading. At break time, younger students enjoyed designing their own book token, part of a national competition run by the World Book Day organisers. The highlight of the day, however, was the Big Book Trivia Quiz. Miss Wiltshire, the Library Assistant who ran the event, was hugely impressed at the level of literature knowledge and sportsmanship shown by all who took part. Team “Bromden”, made up of James Hunt, Joseph Bongard and Matthew McCrone, won first place in the upper school category and Team “Super Awesome Readers”, made up of Archie Keenan, Edward Deakin, Hayden Considine, Harley Harrison and Robin De Berniere-Smart won first place in the lower school category. A group of Year 9 students from Bungay High School competed in the regional finals of the “F1 in Schools”

competition held at Sprowston Community High School, Norwich. Since October, the four students have been deploying their technological skills to design, manufacture and then race a miniature compressed air powered Formula 1 car. On competition day, Vulcan Racing Team (as the students had named themselves) were required to exemplify their skills in three elements – an explanation of their portfolio, a verbal presentation to the judging panel and then the race itself. Whilst the team’s car was only the third fastest in their category, the team from Bungay High School won the award for ‘Best Presentation’ with the judges praising their ability to speak eloquently and passionately about their design without the use of written prompts. It was a great day for the students and a real sense of accomplishment was felt by all. In late February, twenty- two of our Year 11 Media Studies students visited the BBC facilities at the Forum in Norwich. Not only were students given the opportunity to work alongside BBC Radio Norfolk producers in creating ‘running orders’ for Radio News broadcasts, they were also given a tour of the Look East and Radio Norfolk studios. This was all
of Christmas Festivities and also the serious spiritual side. Our thanks must also go to the committee for their tireless efforts in ensuring that every aspect of the evening went smoothly.
Some of our choir have trained voices, but most are amateurs with varying degrees of experience, but all united in a love of singing great music. Some ability to read music is of course an advantage but not essential, as much of our music is well known and easily accessible on the internet. Our
membership fees are
very modest. We rehearse in the United Reform Church, Halesworth on Monday nights from 7.15pm-9.15pm. For more information contact Secretary, Christina Geddes Elderkin on 01986 874130. Frances Watson

in aid of their upcoming GCSE exam and also was to inspire students who have aspirations to work in this exciting industry. Four students - Matthew
Ayling, Kaja Pedersen, Laura Scarlett and Andrew Woolley represented our School at the UKMT
Team Mathematics
Challenge Regional Final held at Framlingham College in March. They performed particularly well in the group question round, gaining 55 marks out of 60. Overall they came in 6th place, and were a credit to the school. Twenty three of our Sixth
Form students recently visited the Houses of Parliament. They made a tour of the House of Commons and Lords, using the services of an official tour guide, before spending an hour with the local Waveney Valley MP Peter Aldous. The students, most of whom are studying the English Civil War as part of their A level
History course, were
able to put their own questions to Peter
Aldous. The whole
experience, facilitated with the help of their MP, enhanced their understanding of the conflict between Crown and Parliament in the C17th as well as making a valuable connection to the politics and issues of the current day.
