Halesworth & Southwold Community News April 2017 15 Changes in Chestnut on the Green
BIG changes in Chestnut Meadow, just after the first cattle grid. In the near future this meadow will not be grazed by cows which means there is no need for the fence between the meadow and the New Reach. That has gone, and a strip of vegetation mown to allow clearer views and access to the waterside. The noticeboard has hopped from the waterside to sit alongside the Track, where many more people will be able to see it. We have heard the requests for better access around the meadow so have mown a good path right round, and we’ll keep this clear during the growing
season. The rest of the rough growth will be left to support the established wildlife, which again is something many users have requested. More rough growth and scrub
– excellent for birds and small mammals - can be seen in “Scrub Triangle”. That’s just opposite Folly Meadow and will soon have its own nameplate. We once tried establishing
a picnic site here, also an experimental arable weed area, but neither of these were successful. So this area will be allowed to do what it does best – grow scrub. Follow the windy path in, the Triangle is more
interesting than it looks from the gateway. After the huge success of
WinterLight! the Green and the Library are working together once again to run our joint Plant Sale. Do look out for this outside the
Library on Saturday 27th May, just the right time to be picking up seedlings and other gardening goodies. Our good neighbour Henry
Cliff on the far side of the New Reach has done a short-back- and-sides job in strimming his banks so that it is very easy to see the water voles, in and out of their holes just above the waterline and nibbling vegetation. They are so relaxed you can sometimes see them almost at your feet on the near bank of the New Reach. And further down, near White Bridge, they are even more active. In the meadows the first slow worms have been seen, and we’re hoping for a grass snake any day now. For news of past and future

VILLAGE HALL NEWS BINGO in Holton is thriving! We have decided to change our popular Bingo sessions to a fortnightly affair as we like to fit in with other providers in the area. Our latest session saw one lucky winner walk away with a Flyer worth £32 and a group of fun players enjoy our home made cakes with coffee/tea for just £1. April date for Bingo is Thursday 13th starting at 7.30pm. Sadly we have a previous booking on the 27th so are unable to run the Bingo, but May will be 11th and 25th. The Pop up Pub usually happens on a Saturday night and with live music, Saturday 22nd April will be our next and we are delighted to welcome back Stuart and Steve and their unique performance. Why not come and enjoy an evening of songs and fun with the duo. We are really grateful to Bill
Ellis and chums who played for us in March when they entertained a select group to a really happy and tuneful evening whilst wandering down memory lane.
Saturday 8th April there will
be a Craft Fair from 10am – 4pm with many stalls offering all sorts of different goods. Refreshments including tea/coffee and home
made cakes available all day alongside bacon rolls! There are still stall spaces available - just ring 01986 872590. During April there should be
a new addition to the outside space of the Hall when we fit a set of Goal Posts for children to use on the green space in front of the Hall. These posts will be removable so that Hirers who do not wish them in place can be accommodated. Anyone wishing to book our super Hall ring 01986 874442.

4th Anniversary for Hidden Ivy, Upper Holton, Halesworth
THE Old Airfield at Upper Holton near Halesworth is home to several independent traders, each specialising in their own industry. Hidden Ivy, a successful
beauty salon based at Unit 12. The business is celebrating its 4th anniversary this year, under the ownership of Louise Chipperfield, although here has been a beauty salon based in the unit for over 15 years. Since April 2013 when Louise
bought the business, she has fully refurbished the salon with a fresh new look and corporate image and expanded the beauty treatments she offers. She has built up an excellent reputation

Louise is a fully qualified
beauty therapist with over 10 years’ experience in the beauty trade. She trained locally at Lowestoft College, and previously worked at the 5* La Manga Spa in Spain, before moving back home and becoming a supervisor at the Potters spa in Hopton.
