10 April 2017 Halesworth & Southwold Community News News from Halesworth Community Church

RECENTLY my wife and I sat with two young African ladies. We met at a venue half-way between London and Suffolk and a story of pain, abuse and many suicide attempts emerged. For the next two and a half hours we helped them understand, and come to terms with, their experiences of life and by the time we parted company they felt utterly

different about

themselves. As a church, we can offer accommodation for people to come to Suffolk to receive counselling help, so a very troubled couple travelled up

Wenhaston Mothers’ Union

AS we are now in Lent, we were pleased to welcome Mrs Win Sutton, who is a member of Halesworth Mothers’ Union, a Lay Reader and was formerly Diocesan President of the Mothers’ Union in Norwich Diocese, as our speaker. Win gave us her thoughts on activities for Lent, and assured us that Lent is a cheerful and hopeful time, and she gave us some pointers on how to make it more meaningful. We were inspired, and Win was thanked by Margaret Bloomfield and presented with a colourful plant. We held our Lady Day Service in Southwold on March 25th. On April 12th, we will have an interesting talk by Mr Anthony Mason, who will tell us about the work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. We always welcome visitors. Margaret Bloomfield

from the South Coast for a short stay. It was rewarding to see them return home having come to such a better place within themselves. Supporting people in these situations involves teamwork within the church, and we are grateful to so many who pull together to make it possible for this kind of help to be offered. The

number of people

requesting help this past month has significantly increased, so it was timely that our latest course was about ‘Understanding how to help’. The course was well attended, and we covered a

range of topics that dealt with emotional and mental health issues. The idea is to equip others to be an effective support to people struggling with these issues. The feedback was very positive, including the following comment: ‘As always, a real personal journey held in a safe space. Lots of food for thought as well as practical tools to draw from. Thank you all so much.’ Visit the website for information activities.

John Sparkes JANE RINGWOOD

MAY I, on behalf of Halesworth & District Twinning Society, pay tribute to the memory of Jane, who was our President from 1998 to 2003. Jane’s outgoing and friendly personality soon endeared her to our friends from our twin towns Bouchain and Eitorf, and it also helped greatly that she

spoke fluent French. She, and her husband Ollie, were the most kind and generous of hosts and on many trips to Bouchain and Eitorf, Jane was an excellent ambassador for our community. Alan Holzer,

Secretary of Halesworth Twinning Society, 1994-2004.

The Bollart Campaign THE time has come to complete

the bollard decoration. We are aiming this year for completion by the end of April this year.

The town will look even better and more impressive if all the bollards are decorated. St Mary’s Church would like to paint the bollards across the path outside the Church and are

seeking assistance - can anyone help?

There are also some people in the town who would like help with painting their bollards - are you that person or do you know someone who is? Telephone

MRS NERISSA CHARMAN THE funeral service for Mrs

Nerissa Betty Charman who died peacefully aged 87, in the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on Februrary 1st was held at St Faith’s Crematorium on March 1st 2017. Processional music was Debussy’s Clair De Lune and the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful was sung. The Service was conducted by Civil Celebrant Mark Tyack who said that Rissie was the daughter of Mr & Mrs Bertie Moore and was brought up in Mells Hamlet and Halesworth.

She was educated at St

Mary’s Girls School in Bungay from where she witnessed the wartime bombing of

the city

of Norwich. She had a love of horses and riding and during her early working years she received a grounding in the hospitality industry.

After she married

Charles in 1963 they formed a very successful husband and wife business partnership working as hoteliers in Cambridge and Surrey. Later they played very active roles at Halesworth Golf Club where their expertise was put to good use.

Jane, on Southwold Pier, with Dr Bernard Courouble, Chairman of Bouchain twinning, and Claudia Mund, President of Eitorf twinning partnership, on the occasion, in 2002, of the fitting of a plaque to the pier to mark twenty years of twinning between Halesworth and Bouchain.

welcome. Charles died in 1995 after which Rissie spent the winter months in Florida with friends. Rissie shared a love of gardening with Sandra and Ezra and spent many hours with them visiting local garden centres. Rissies’s garden was her pride and joy and full of colour which reflected her creativity. She spent many Christmases with them either in Halesworth or South Ruislip, from where they even attended the Boxing Day football match at QPR.

On Monday afternoons Rissie attended art classes in Bramfield Village Hall with her best friend Muriel Barber and they had many examples of her painting skills on glass and ceramics in their home. She was not just a neighbour, but a close friend and member of our family who will miss her but remember the happy memories and her zest for life. The poem by David Harkins, She is Gone, was read by Ezra Leverett, and Recessional Music was Spring from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

If desired donations in memory of Rissie made payable to The Salvation Army may be sent to Woolnough Funeral Service, The Cemetery Chapels, Holton Road, Halesworth IP19 8HD.

House, Halesworth aged 91 on 12th February 2017. A eulogy was given by Celebrant Tina Hayward who said Douglas was born the fifth child of Mr & Mrs R W Davey in Bramfield. The family moved to Quay Street, Halesworth, where they had a shop retailing home-made sweets. Douglas was educated at Halesworth Council School (now Edgar Sewter) and after leaving school worked in the printing business of W E Fairweather in Bridge Street. His eldest brother Robert was one of the unfortunate members of the Suffolk Regiment who was lost at Singapore, and Douglas was conscripted into the army in 1943. He was rejected as an infantryman for medical reasons and entered the Army Catering Corps where he trained as an army chef, was promoted to the rank of corporal, and served for four years in Germany. During this time he met Iris Butcher and they were married in Blyford Church in 1945. After demobilisation in 1947 their first home was in Cowles Yard, off London Road but they were among the earliest tenants in Durban Close in 1952 where they brought up their four daughters. He worked as a baker for Mr B Ellis in London Road and then in apple orchards before
