SPRING IN THE GARDEN April in the Garden
SPRING really does feel like it has arrived, the main advantage is
the lighter
with Mr & Mrs B Landscaping Services evenings which
enable us to get out in the garden at the end of the day and start getting things ready for summer. Weeds the enemy of all gardeners will also be feeling full of spring energy and begin to grow with vigour and if left unchecked will take over in no time, so regular weeding is essential.

Grass will need regular cutting, set the blades high-ish to start so you are just tipping the grass blades, this will make the garden looking much tidier, but don’t forget the edging. All you grass clippings can go in the compost bin or heap to start putting some fresh goodness in. By having a compost heap or bin in you garden it will enable you to make valuable fertiliser for your garden. A selection of jobs that can be done this month include – Sowing - Sow peas throughout April. Sow carrots for an early summer crop. Sow perpetual spinach and chard. Sow courgettes, French beans, runner and borlotti beans, squash, pumpkins and sweetcorn under glass. Sow sweetcorn in pots for planting outside when the weather warms up. Sow half- hardy bedding plants in trays on windowsills or in the greenhouse. If you’re planting a new lawn, or want to seed bare patches in your current lawn, April is a good time to sow seed. Planting - Weather permitting, plant summer bulbs such as gladioli in free-draining soil. In mild areas plant dahlia tubers outside. Plant hanging baskets inside the greenhouse to give the plants chance to get established
Halesworth Gardeners Society

LADYBIRD nurseries came to Wenhaston Village hall for the Gardeners meeting. Bob Booker had a wonderful selection of plants for us to gaze upon while he gave his talk. He started by telling us the history of the garden centre. His parents met at a horticultural college; after they married they ran a small holding in Spalding before buying the land in Snape. Here they grew and sold produce to local shops. Bob had been to college and in 1985 he joined his parents to help run the business. With his wife Maggie they now grow over 650 thousand plants every year with 25 varieties of scented and fancy Pelargoniums among them. Plans as to what to plant have to be made a year ahead and cuttings are taken in September. While explaining how to propagate and look after these lovely plants, Bob showed us some beautiful slides of the many different varieties of Pelargoniums. His daughter, Angela, is keen to join the venture while Archie, her two year old son seems also to be in the frame. Bob is convinced that in years to come Archie will be telling him what to do. When the talk ended we were
able to indulge in buying some of the plants on display.
Next month - David Keleel will give an illustrated talk on some of the interesting gardens he has visited in various places.
before you hang them out for a big summer display. Do not leave outside until all danger of frost has passed, usually the end of May or beginning of June. Plant potatoes in deep drills 30cm apart with 60cm between rows. Plant runner beans in pots or under glass.
Pruning - Clip winter- flowering heathers. Start mowing the lawn regularly. Remove faded flowers from spring bulbs but leave the foliage to die back naturally to feed the bulbs for next year. Privet hedges which didn’t get an autumn prune should be trimmed now. Things to do in the garden - Now is a good time to buy perennials – there’s a huge selection of one-litre plants available. Feed trees and shrubs. Apply a general fertiliser or sulphate or potash around strawberries, fruit bushes and
trees. Begin spraying fruit if you’re worried about pests and diseases. Start treating your lawn with a ‘feed and weed’ product like Evergreen. You can use this through to September. Spot treat moss or perennial weeds. Hoe borders weekly to prevent weeds taking a hold. Watch the weather forecasts and get ready to protect fruit blossom where necessary. Start to harden off bedding plants raised
under glass. Slugs and
snails will be on the march now, so watch out – lots of products are available including some that are safe to the environment. Beware of mice attacking beans and sweet peas in the greenhouse. Enjoy this month and try and get out as much as possible, if you need any help in the garden or just some advice please call us. Richard & Nina Bareham Mr & Mrs B Services 01986 874493/ 07939 855932
