Nestled on the edge of Wenhaston village as you travel towards Southwold there is a small nursery tucked away behind big gates—and beyond these gates there’s a small team of seven plant lovers working away every day to grow and propagate hundreds of wonderful plants to distribute amongst likeminded gardeners from far and wide.
This nursery is known as Woottens Plants and it has been evolving and growing for the past 25 years. From a tiny sapling nurtured by Michael Loftus, this nursery grew into a huge blossoming tree for us all to enjoy. However by 2016 this tree was in need of some renovation and pruning in order to keep on blooming for the future. So the work began in late summer to make these important changes.
Whilst much of the work undertaken to rejuvenate our nursery is ongoing, this winter has seen a number of tasks completed behind those big gates. The nursery is under new ownership by two dedicated staff members who have worked on the nursery for over 6 years, with a team of existing staff all passionate about plants and keen to keep the nursery thriving as ‘The Plantsman’s Nursery’. Hundreds of plants have been propagated throughout the winter and repairs carried out on the site from fixing and erecting polytunnels to building new methods of saving water.
This year will see our Iris fields bloom, our hardy Geranium collection grow and an array of events taking place on site to welcome new and existing customers from the local area.
The nursery itself is now located on Hall Road in Wenhaston, just past Blackheath Road travelling towards the A12 and is open to the public the first weekend of every month between March–November. We’ll be out and about travelling to plant events across the county including the new Spring Garden Market in Halesworth on 29th April, Plant Heritage Fair at Helmingham Hall and both the county shows. On site we’ll be holding our Grand Spring Fair on 7th May—bigger than ever! Our specialist Pelargonium and Auricula days will still run this year and after such a warm spring we hope our Iris fields will flower better than ever.
We’ll still be supporting Halesworth in Bloom, maintaining the Triple Plea roundabout and connecting with local groups such as Halesworth Women in Business to promote local shopping and supporting small businesses in our area.

Our horticultural courses are running throughout the year, with our in house tutor Neill Ludmon teaching and advising you on how to design your garden, propagate plants and tackle those problem areas as well as running our ‘Border Design Service’.
If you’d like to buy from us but can’t make the open weekends or events simply place an order either online or give us a ring, you can then collect from the nursery on a Wednesday (all day) or Saturday morning.
