Halesworth & Southwold Community News April 2017 13

New Reydon Sports and Community Pavilion Project – Dream becomes reality!

A SUFFOLK community is

excited at the prospect of having a new Sports and Community Pavilion which, after a long project by community members, is taking shape. The Pavilion in Reydon is being built together with additional sports pitches and a new large car parking area. Since the closure of Reydon High School in 1990 the playing field has been used by the local football club and other sports groups and the site also included the

Youth Centre building which was used by a range of community groups.

Now the Reydon Playing Field

Charity has been established to take over and develop the land and buildings on the former school site. As part of the project the Charity now owns the original playing field and has secured a 999 years lease on part of the adjacent field to provide further sports pitches.

The new Sports and Community Pavilion will have a large lounge area and a community activities hall which can be used independently or as one big space, together with four changing rooms, a kitchen, storage and office space. As well as providing a home for the current users, including the Youth Club, Toddlers Group, Children's Centre and Football Club it will be available for other local groups to use. A new full sized football pitch has been created and there is room for further sports pitches on demand. It is expected that the first games on the new pitches will be played by the junior football teams at the start of the next season. The Pavilion will also be available for use by other community groups and and it is anticipated that it will also be a perfect venue for functions of all kinds with its attractive, open and safe position on the playing field and the adjacent parking. The Charity has secured financial assistance from many sources for the project including Hopkins Homes, The Southwold

While it is a great

opportunity for local people to visit buildings of interest in their home town it is also a chance to attract visitors from outside the area.

There will be a national website listing all the towns taking part with a link to social media sites specific to Halesworth. If you have

accommodation which you would like listed on the Halesworth specific sites could you please contact Michael Imison, email: imisonplay@ hotmail.com before the end of April.

Publicity for the event and .

how to find more details will start during English Tourism week at the start of April and will be highlighted during the Hooker Bicentennial Weekend at the end of June as well as in various local publications and on various internet sites prior to the launch of the brochure at the end of July.

Trust, The Reydon Trust, Sport England, Suffolk County Council and Orwell Homes. The substantial funding from Hopkins Homes came when the company developed the disused Eversley School Playing field in Reydon for the new Healthy Living Centre site.

The building itself is currently under construction, and it is hoped that, once the external work is completed, a team of volunteers

will contribute

towards the internal work and decorating. Further grants are also being sought for this. The last of the old High School buildings have recently been demolished, and there is now room for a car park together with coach and disabled parking. Barrie Remblance, who is Chairman of the Parish Council

and also a Trustee of the Reydon Playing Fields Charity said ‘The Pavilion is the result of years of hard work, and the project has the full support of Reydon Parish Council. We are looking forward to seeing the completion of the pavilion itself, and are very grateful to everyone who has worked on the project or donated towards it. It will be an amazing asset for Reydon and the local community and will provide a home for a whole range of local events and activities.’ Further details on getting involved with the completion of the pavilion, or information on hiring it

for use can

be obtained by emailing Zoe (Trustee/Secretary) on Zoehutchy@hotmail.co.uk or Steve (Chairman/Trustee) on witmanbuff@hotmail.co.uk

I HAD hoped by now to be able to cry ‘Eureka’ in celebration of receiving planning consent for our extension, but I have to be mute for we are still awaiting formal approval. Southwold Town Council has

given its

blessing but we still await the all important approval of Waveney Council. Instead of crying Eureka we had John Barber, our well known Town Crier, using the traditional Oyez, Oyez at his farewell ‘shout’ on Saturday 4th March, when his first announcement to a large and appreciative crowd was about the Alfred Corry Museum. We wish John a long and happy retirement and the photograph shows Jim Blythe presenting John with a little something on behalf of all who work at the Museum.

The Alfred Corry Lifeboat Museum If you would like

to join us,

Jonathan Hunt, our indefatigable Chairman, is at the Museum on Sunday mornings and would be delighted to see you. But be warned, for the Museum gets into your blood: I joined as a steward eighteen years ago – and am still here! In preparation for Easter we have re-stocked with Easter chicks and baskets, complete with chocolate eggs and our steward Lynn, with a friend, has produced another selection of delightful handmade cards. A new item is packs of notecards, with pictures of the harbour, beach and the river which are priced at £1.50 for six cards. There are no Easter bunnies for sale but do try and hop in some time and see for yourself. We wish you a very happy Easter and look forward to seeing you.

We duly resumed summer opening hours on Saturday 1st April with our new lighting installed; the floor and steps now painted with dust resistant paint, and the windows cleaned and polished. Best news of all is that we welcome back Johnny Warren as a steward, and welcome David Cragie as a member of the crew of stewards. David has a particular affinity with the Alfred Corry for he is the great- great-grandson of John Cragie who was the first coxswain of the lifeboat. It is good that we have a full crew of stewards but it would be nice to have a few reserves.
