Halesworth & Southwold Community News April 2017 5

BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE HALESWORTH

& DISTRICT MUSEUM AS Spring arrives, so does a new display at the Museum. Southwold Railway Trust have put together a fascinating collection

of photographs and

items recalling the Southwold Railway which ran between Halesworth and Southwold for 50 years from 1879 to 1929. This narrow gauge railway line ran along a 9 mile route between the two towns, carrying thousands of passengers and also commercial freight.

Amongst

the items on display are the station bell and the all-important ‘Token’ which the driver held to ensure safe passage of the train over particular stretches of the route.

The display will be on

view from w/c April 3rd and will run until the end of September. On April 20th the first of this year’s popular Museum talks will take place at the United Reformed Church at 7.30pm. We are delighted to welcome Roy Tricker who will be providing his unique insight into local churches. A crusading church-crawler since the age of four, Roy spends his time sharing his passion for these amazing buildings, praising and promoting them from the

the love of

pulpit, projector and coach seat. He has written over 200 church guidebooks and some published works, and has broadcast on radio and TV. He firmly believes that

churches is

absorbing and infectious for people of all religions - and of none. His illustrated talk will try to convey some of his love affair with old will

prove enlightening

churches, and and

entertaining. On April 27th at 7pm the Museum will be holding its Friends Evening at the Museum. This is an opportunity for the Museum to say thank you to the many Friends of the Museum whose valuable support and donations enable us to continue to serve our community. Friends will be able to see our latest displays and hear about our plans for the future. If you are thinking of becoming a Friend to the Museum (and we hope you are…) please come along to meet us. Finally, over the school Easter holiday period, children will be able to take part in the Museum’s Easter Egg hunt. See how many can you can spot for a sweet reward!

MEMORIES OF ALDEBURGH?

THE AGM of the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group will be held on Monday 24th April at 7.30pm at Leiston United Church, High Street, Leiston IP16 4EL. Following the short formal meeting, Charlotte Newson will give a presentation of a project she will be working on this summer with the Red House, Aldeburgh.

The project will involve two elements - one: audio about local people’s knowledge, stories and memories of Aldeburgh; the other part would involve getting people to come to workshops to make a costume/headdress/

something to enter the carnival. The meeting will be open to all, free of charge, although only paid up members may vote. So, if you have memories of Aldeburgh in days gone by, or want to get involved in the carnival, why don’t you come along?

Entrance is not at the front of the church, but on the left hand side as you face the building. Parking is free in the Co-op/ Solar car park which adjoins it, but you must sign your vehicle in at the tills in the supermarket or face a charge of £100.

HALESWORTH

VOLUNTEER CENTRE THANK you to all our volunteers

and friends that

Wednesday 15th March at the Triple Plea to celebrate

joined us on our

30th anniversary. It was a most enjoyable evening and lovely to catch up with so many friends, including Yvonne Cutts, who was the very first Co-ordinator at HVC back in the 1980’s. This is a tremendous milestone for HVC and with the help of so many volunteers over the last 30 years, we have achieved so much. Karen Austin, Chair of Trustees presented a gift and gave thanks to Alan Holzer, who has been a volunteer driver with us for over 15 years, for all his commitment, help and support, as he now retires. Karen gave thanks to Tracy Gardner, for everything she had achieved during the 9 years she was Centre Manager at HVC, and then introduced and welcomed Emma Healey, as the new HVC Centre Manager. Emma officially takes up post on April 3rd, and we look forward to moving into the future under Emma’s leadership.

Karen also

thanked Sue and Ian at the Triple Plea for the delicious buffet and their continued support, donating all proceeds from the monthly quiz night to HVC.

Another

successful quiz followed our celebration and a grand total of £91 was raised.

Thanks to all

that join us on a regular basis for quiz night.

If anyone feels they are able to donate some spare time, we are keen to recruit more volunteers and we would be delighted to hear from you.

The demand

for our Community Car Service continues to increase, particularly requests for help with escorted shopping and shopping lists and while we do need drivers for the longer hospital trips, equally we need drivers for local shopping trips, giving extra support and assistance to our more vulnerable and less mobile users.

If you think you can help, in any way, please do get in touch: Halesworth Volunteer Centre, Waveney Local Office, London Road,

Halesworth IP19 8LW. Telephone 01986 875600.

Moonwalk - in association with the Halesworth Tourism Group

CELEBRATE the start of Spring by joining a Full Moon Walk on Tuesday 11th April.

Explore the delights of the

nearby countryside by the light of the moon!

The circular walk, between 5-6 miles, will be mainly off road, setting off to the west of the town across the Blyth River and following a network of footpaths and quiet lanes through a range of landscapes which, we hope, will give us good opportunities for spotting or hearing nighttime wildlife (not least barn and tawny owls) and seeing the undulating countryside through a different lens.

Although we walk by the light of the moon, please do come equipped with a torch (a red bike torch is great as it preserves your night vision) in case we meet a car on any of the road sections; you’ll also need good walking boots; a bottle of water and appropriate clothing.

If the weather is horrible (ie heart sinks at the idea of going out!), the walk will be cancelled. More information about the route will be posted on Facebook. It is important that you let us know by email if you intend to
