Sport Olympic hopeful visits Freebrough B By James McGill

ritish Olympic Long Jumper JJ Jegede visited Freebrough Academy to give an assembly to students who do PE.

He is one of 20 athletes that travel around schools with Sky Sports Living for Sport to give motivational talks and tell students about British athletics.

JJ who is originally from Hammersmith in London and is now living and training in Gateshead came to the Brotton based Academy to talk about his past, career and inspire the students to reach their full potential.

JJ is hoping to compete at the London 2012 Olympics and better his personal best of 8.04m in the Olympic stadium which is

only one mile from where he was born. In a question and answer session with some of the Pupils asked who JJ’s heroes were and what his plans after the Olympics are.

JJ replied: “When I was growing up my mum was a huge inspiration. I saw how hard she worked and how much effort she put in to support her family, my sporting hero has to be Roger Federer he’s achieved so much.

“After the 2012 Olympics I will keep training hard to improve. There are the world championships in Russia and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to look forward to and I want to go to a few more Olympic games.”

In honour of Mr Ed Man of Steel

R

edcar Rugby Club played a memorial game in honour of ‘Man

of Steel’ Geoff Waterfi eld, or Mr Ed as he was known to his friends. Geoff, who died last year at the age of 43 was the Chairman of multi unions at Teesside Cast Products and acknowledged by many as making an enormous contribution to keeping the steel industry alive in Redcar.

The game, which was played on Boxing Day and watched by Geoff’s partner Sheryl and son Wills, was the idea of Tony Beale, a close friend. It was between two teams representing Redcar Rugby’s over 35s and under 35s, with the over 35s running out the winners.

Plaques, kindly donated

by C J Carpets and Contech Electrical, to commemorate Geoff have been placed at

the Rugby Club including one plaque of a horse’s head, representing Mr Ed from the TV programme.

Steward of Redcar Rugby Club, Derek Young said: “Geoff was given that nickname by one of the lads while they were on a tour, because he never stopped talking, just like the talking horse, Mr Ed off the TV.”

Food and after match entertainment were provided and just under £1000 was raised, to be split between the Leukemia Society and the junior section of the Rugby Club.

Charlie Challenor of CJ Carpets told Coastal View: “It was a great day and enjoyed by all. Mr Ed would certainly have approved.” The game will now be

played each year on Boxing Day in honour of Mr Ed!
