Redcar MP Ian Swales working for you

e have had a busy couple of weeks recently with some key areas of policy starting to make an impact in the North East. As you know, I am keen to get industry up and running again in this area, and green industry is very much at the forefront of people’s minds when talking about future development. The Government have been backing the green industry in the North East, helping the region to lead the way in a green revolution. The announcement last autumn, which provided the region with 500 new jobs to build the batteries needed, is just the start of the opportunities that the North East can benefit from.
So I was delighted to hear just this week that there will be 12 electric car charge points installed on Teesside, enabling more people across the region to take advantage of the governments grant to help buy an electric car. I was able to drive the Nissan Leaf at our conference last September and have its benefits explained to me, at the time my concern was that there needed to
be significant investment across the region to install charging points, and I am really pleased to see that this is now happening. The ‘’plug in’’ points will be in Belmont House, Guisborough, Windy Hill Lane car park in Marske, Cat Nab car park in Saltburn and on North Road in Loftus and I will look forward to meeting people who are using them and seeing how this develops. Of course, industry is only part of the picture, and part of what I enjoy the most about this job is the variety. Redcar played host to a visit from Andrew Stunell, who came to see ‘’Sea View’’ cottage, a recently renovated empty home that has stood empty for over 20 years. Redcar and Cleveland has just over 1,000 Empty Homes, with a £100m pot of funding that is intended to significantly reduce this figure. It will be great to see how much of an impact the Empty Homes fund will have in Redcar and Cleveland; it is always good to see empty homes come alive once more. And hot of the press today, I have been to an all party meeting of Teesside MP’s

and Tees Valley Unlimited to discuss Peel Airport’s recently announced decision to sell its interests in the Durham Tees Valley Airport. It has agreed that it was in the best interests of residents and businesses that this uncertainty should be ended as soon as possible. We agreed to all work together so that this was possible. It is vital that this area retains its transport links. We need to make sure that it is as accessible as possible to get around for business to thrive.

I held one of the busiest surgeries that I have had since becoming an MP this weekend, and it was great to see so many of you turn out to talk to me about your issues. It is really important that I hear your views, so please keep attending. My next surgery is on Saturday 28th January, 10 -11 at Gleneagles Centre, New Marske, and 11:45 – 12:30 at Grangetown Library. I look forward to meeting you there.

Local MP encourages all schools to take up offer from the YHA
L
ocal MP, Ian Swales has today written to all schools to encourage them to
take up the offer to give young people from low income families a chance to go away with their school or youth group. The Youth Hostel Association offer bursaries so that young people have the chance to go away on activities to help boost their confidence and develop skills that will help them through life. They offer up to 50%
off the cost of food and accommodation for young people from low-income households. Ian commented: ‘’I am really pleased to
see that charities like the YHA are out there to help young people. Experiences during their school years are really important to help students develop confidence and gain life skills. I would encourage all schools and youth clubs to go and have a look at www.
breaksforkids.co.uk and apply.’’

ast month Ian launched the competition which saw hundreds of
entries pour in from schoolchildren all over the constituency. Primary school children were asked to design an image for the front while secondary school children entered a festive verse for the inside. The competition was judged by community bastion, Frankie Wales and Kathy Lloyd, manager of Tees Valley Women’s Centre.
The winning design was that of Joseph Kasonali from Ings Farm Primary School. Second and third place designs were printed on the reverse of the card, by Thomas Neal, age 3, from Dormanstown Primary School
and Sophie Gibson, age 10, from Bankfields Primary School respectively. The verse selected was by Isabel Wherritt, Nunthorpe School whose poem was both festive and heart-warming.
The printed card will be sent to hundreds of people across the country including the Prime Minister and Deputy-Prime Minister. Ian said: “It was a really tough competition to judge, there were so many brilliant entries. Thanks to all those who took the time to enter.
“The winning design is perfect! It says so much about our area and how it’s developing – this year is the last that the steelworks could be covered with snow!”
