Coastal View & Moor News Issue 19

Welcome to Coastal View & Moor News Issue 19

A little late maybe, but we

would like to take this opportunity to wish all friends of Coastal View a very happy, healthy and prosperous year in 2012. We realise activities and community groups may suffer as a result of funding cuts as well as other things but we also know that our communities are strong and always come through for each other, especially when times are hard. As a newspaper, we rely on you, our readers to provide us with news from your area, but we have recently been criticized for publishing such news! We have been accused of running articles that have been sent to us, verbatim, with no journalism or balance in any of them or even a hint of impartiality. It is NOT up to us to persuade you our readers how or what to

think and we will NEVER twist your words, as we continue to tell it how it is, which is how you see it. We would like to tell you a little bit about Charles Dickens’ history to emphasise this point. Before he started to write his now very famous books, Charles Dickens decided he wanted to become a reporter. He taught himself shorthand and when he was sixteen, became a court reporter.

At the age of 18 he joined the Mirror of Parliament, a newspaper that reported the daily proceedings of Parliament and would sit there for hours and days on end, writing down verbatim exactly what the politicians said there.

spend most of the time speaking “sentences with no meaning in them.”

He was however, impressed with some of the MPs who he thought were genuinely interested in making Britain a better place to live.

Despite his feelings about them he still continued to write down and publish what they said word for word.

Our promise to you is that we will continue to publish your stories, in your own words, about what’s happening in your house, in your street, in your community and we reckon if it’s good enough for Charles Dickens to report that way, then it’s good enough for Coastal View!

We hope you enjoy reading this issue. Lynne & Steve Nicholls
