Tackling Drugs in Boosbeck & Lingdale E

ast Cleveland Police would like your help in reducing the impact drug dealing and drug taking has on your community. Although this is not a large problem, drugs do still effect peoples lives. In 2011 East Cleveland Police Officers made great in roads tackling drugs in your area, particularly Boosbeck with two Cannabis Farms being discovered and several drugs warrants being executed. This was mainly due to community intelligence passed to local officers.

There are several ways you can assist in making your villages safer with various means of contacting the Police. The first is the use of the ‘Bobby Box’s’ located at Boosbeck and Lingdale Post Offices. This service simply means you can post any information you would like us to investigate into a secure locked box that only the Police have access to. Another opportunity is the local Ward surgeries we hold in your villages. You can come along and have a chat with, and get to know, your local officer.

The times, dates and locations of ward

surgeries can be found on the Cleveland Police website and the Cleveland Police Neighbourhoods number 01642-302929 where you can speak directly to the Officer who covers your particular area.

T

his is your chance to come along and discuss any policing

or community issues on a one to one basis, with your local Police Officer and Police Support Officer.

A Neighbourhood Watch Meeting will be held at Chaloner Primary School, Guisborough on 23rd January 2012 at 7pm – all welcome!

A combined Carol Concert with Skelton Primary School Choir

T

he Dalesmen Singers from Danby proved in excellent voice for the final, hectic run-up to Christmas with a series of Carol Concerts. Sunday, Dec 11th saw them perform at Castleton Village Hall where many old favourites were sung, along with some relatively new, among them the `Stable Cave Carol` written specially for the Dalesmen Singers by Castleton`s Reverend Clive Artley, with musical

arrangement by the choirs Musical Director Stephen Maltby, from Hinderwell. Soloists were Jim Muir, who added a splendid dash of humour with the classic `Carol Singers,` which the audience loved and Hinderwell`s Colin Easterby. Big man, big voice, his deep, rich tone enthralling everyone with a rendition of `A Child is Born.` A great night with a total in the region of £100 raised for

Village Hall funds. A combined Carol Concert

followed on Dec 13th with Skelton Primary School Choir at Skelton Church. Good support on the night, the children of the choir proving exceptionally talented, as the carols `True Colours` and `White Christmas,` were accompanied with appropriate sign language. Two lively numbers followed, one of which `Putting Baubles on the Christmas Tree` appeared to be their favourite. A total of £224

was raised in aid of Skelton Primary School and the School Choir.

The magnificent setting of St Hilda`s Church, Whitby on Dec 16th proved a fitting finale as the Dalesmen Singers performed in company with the Tuesday Singers, Caedmon School Choir and a superb Brass Quintet.

Senior Student leaders, Ebonee Dring and Harry Baker began proceedings by welcoming all to the church. Seasonal readings followed at intervals throughout the performance from pupils of Caedmon School, Emily Botham, Michael Beeforth, Katy Canty, Katie Hodgson, Andrew Heward and Millie Draper. Emily Botham also sang the first verse solo of `Once in Royal David`s City. ` The collection was in aid of the Cardiac Unit at James Cook University Hospital. The incomparable Ann Hartley from Danby, who devotes so much of her time to the choir, was Accompanist for all three concerts. Many thanks Ann, from all choir members. With Musical Director Stephen Maltby unable to conduct the choir due to injury, enthusiastic and versatile Andy Dyer from Castleton has stepped splendidly into the role until such time as Stephen is fit again.

Spring has arrived early in Saltburn By Mike Morrissey S

pring has arrived early in Saltburn with a bed of daffodils flowering the earliest period known - before Christmas. Three poked their heads up in The Ridge, a cul-de-sac sheltered from windswept Marske Mill Lane, on December 23. This was three weeks earlier than the record up till now, January 15. “It’s down to our strange weather,” said Colin Vaux, who planted the bulbs about 30 years ago. “A lot of people remark on when our daffs flower. It’s nice to see colour in the winter.I

was pleased to see them out when we returned from a visit overseas at the end of December.” Mr Vaux, a keen gardener, said the plants flowered usually in January because they had been planted deeper than usual - about five inches - to foil squirrels. Also they were in a sunny spot and sheltered from the wind. “A year ago, with the snow and ice of December and January it was February before bulbs flowered. In 2010 they didn’t show until March.”
