Coastal View & Moor News Issue 19 Landmark visit for Coatham Primary pupils C

oatham Primary School pupils were among the first visitors to take a close up look at the construction of the Vertical Pier on Redcar seafront when they visited the site.

The 30 year 5 pupils tour began with a visit to the Station Business Centre in Redcar where they looked at scale models of all the regeneration projects taking place on the seafront.

The tour then moved on to the Regeneration Centre on Redcars seafront. This provided the pupils with the opportunity to see some of the individual scale models of The Hub, Redcar Leisure and Community Heart and also the Seaside Landmark and gain an understanding of all the projects.

Their final stop off was a visit to the site of the Vertical Pier for a close up view of the steel structure that will form Redcars Seaside Landmark. Willmott Dixons Project Team members building the structure were on hand to answer any questions. Sue Radcliffe, Head Teacher of Coatham Church of England Primary School, said:

“Year 5 pupils were fortunate to visit Finley Structures, who fabricated the steel for the Seaside Landmark. The children are getting really excited and making the link between what they previously saw and discovered. They can now see the steel forming the Seaside Landmark here in Redcar.

This is a fantastic learning experience and it will contribute to our school project focussing on “The Future”. Councillor Mark Hannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development said: “The Vertical Pier will provide the centrepiece for the regeneration of Redcar seafront and it is vital that the Council and its contractors involve local people each step of the way.

This is a really exciting time for Redcar with over £75 million investment in the town over the next 3 years.” Andy Mackintosh, Project Director at

Willmott Dixon Construction said: “As leaders in sustainable construction we encourage our sites to work as closely as possible with local communities and this includes educational visits such as this one.

Flight to the future R

Keen to go green at Eco Village

esidents and community leaders were given a glimpse of a green future - as an innovative £3.5m eco village threw its doors open for the first time. A special open day in South Bank offered a sneak preview of work so far on the new and refurbished properties, with the development on track to be completed soon.

Fifteen new two and three-bedroom homes are being built, with some featuring the very latest green technology that will save owners an average of £1,000 a year on energy bills, compared to traditional properties. They come complete with modern kitchen facilities and sizeable gardens, with buyers able to take advantage of a range of financial options through developer Gentoo.

A

mbitious regeneration plans designed to transform Redcar’s seafront

are now on show with the launch of an animated fly-through of the developments. The virtual tour can be viewed at www. redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/redcarseafront and features how the seafront will look once the work is completed. The 3D animation sweeps in from the sea and offers viewers the chance to take a look at the new:

•sea defences designed to strengthen the sea walls and ensure the seafront is protected from coastal flood risks and coastal erosion •improved promenade including new water cascades, performance space and sheltered platforms

•creative industries centre ‘The Hub’ on the site of the former Palace Theatre •80 ft high ‘Vertical Pier’ providing viewing

points, exhibition areas, café and retail. Cabinet Member for Economic

Development, Councillor Mark Hannon said: “The virtual tour really brings to life the

vision for Redcar seafront and with all the development progressing well I can’t wait for that vision to become a reality when the work is finished.

The projects will help to stimulate economic growth and attract more visitors to the town as well as improving the living and working environment for local people.” The vertical pier and creative business hub are part funded by the NE ERDF competitiveness programme 2007-13. The Redcar seafront improvement, new sea wall and enhanced landscaping is a joint initiative by Redcar and Cleveland Council and the Environment Agency.

The Sunderland-based firm is building the properties on behalf of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, which has placed the eco village at the heart of its regeneration work in South Bank.

The Council secured £936,000 from the Homes and Communities Agency for the project.

Four of the houses meet level six of the Government’s stringent ‘Code for sustainable Homes’, with tripleglazed doors and windows, photo-voltaic panels and composting facilities. A further 11 terraced properties on Queen Street have been refurbished - to include second-floor balconies with stunning views over the Eston Hills - and will be available to rent.

We also hope that these visits will encourage youngsters into the many exciting areas in the construction industry.

We constantly strive to employ local people for local work, with a large proportion of our supply chain based in Teesside.”
