Coastal View & Moor News Issue 19 ECO SUSTAINABILITY LTD F
irstly … a very Happy New Year to everyone from the LEADER funded ESL project.
NOW …….. It’s back to normal and we’ve got to face up to the reality of those winter energy bills! We’ve indulged ourselves over Christmas & New Year (quite rightly) but now we need to discipline ourselves again and look at our waste. As I wrote in my December column, applying good energy housekeeping can save you real money. ESL can provide you with a list of easy to do actions that WILL save you money over the year. Actually knowing which household items cost the most to run and how best to use them is half the battle.
Do we all re-cycle? Yes of course we do , there’s the obvious things like the green bin, the blue paper bags, bottles, cans, etc and I’d like to bet that everyone of us has ornaments or collectables of some sort passed down from our parents or grandparents. Antiques are ‘recycled’ ….. Imagine how many owners an ornament from the 1800’s has had. Back then it wasn’t a ‘throw-away’ society, good items were made to last and people took care of them. Unfortunately nowadays, there’s a trend to think everything should be used once and then thrown away ……. in some cases, onto the street or into the hedgeback!
In Britain alone we send 160 million tons of rubbish to the tip EVERY year. However we are now recycling around 35% of our waste compared to only 5% a decade ago. It’s still a fact that we throw away approx one third of all the perishable food we buy. Many items such as fruit and veg have been imported from the other side of the world, which means a lot of fuel has been used to get it here, not to say what an impact it has on our country’s import / export balance. Collectively we can all make a difference if we cut down on waste, only buy the items you KNOW will be eaten, not buying things ‘just in case.’
To change the tone and for a bit of light amusement, I would recommend anyone with access to the internet to look on the Energy Saving Trust website – there’s a fantastic on line water use calculator and also a travel energy check. It’s fun to do (just simple clicks) and it will show you how much water and energy you are using and give you a report at the end as to the potential savings you can make.

Two new members needed for North York Moors National Park Authority
T
he search is on for two new colleagues to join the North York Moors National Park Authority’s team of Members – an influential group of people who play a major role in shaping the direction of the Authority. The appointments will be made by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Caroline Spelman and the closing deadline for applications is 13 February 2012.
Candidates will be expected to have a good awareness of the issues affecting National Parks generally and a clear understanding of National Park purposes. Knowledge of the cultural heritage of the Park or business management would be a particular advantage but are not essential. The National Park Authority’s 22 Members are responsible for big decisions on the North York Moors’ strategic management including wildlife, archaeology, education, planning, recreation and communications. Six of the Authority’s Members are ‘National’ Members appointed by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The remainder are elected by parish councils and local authorities within the North York Moors.
The appointments will start in May 2012 and are initially for up to four years with
the option of re-appointment for a total period of up to eight years. The position is unsalaried, although an allowance and expenses are provided. Members are asked to commit between two and three days a month to Authority work. Applications are particularly encouraged from members of ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, women and young people but the final decision will be purely on merit. Jim Bailey, Chairman of the North York Moors National Park Authority, said: “Members play a key role in setting policies and priorities for the National Park Authority and ensuring that money is well spent. There is no denying that our new recruits join us at a challenging time in our history, but there is also much to be positive about including a new management plan, the unveiling of an exciting new exhibition area at Sutton Bank National Park Centre and the 60th anniversary of the North York Moors National Park.”

Are you behind the times ?
his is a good time of year to check your motoring documents. Make sure your insurance is still valid and that you`ve informed your insurer of any changes of circumstances. It’s also worth a quick look at the windscreen of your car to check that the tax disc is still valid. Reminders can get lost in the post or put in the letter rack and forgotten about.
T
Last but not least remember that your driving licence doesn`t last forever. If you have a photocard
licence it needs renewing every ten years. As it’s ten years now since photocard licences were first introduced, it follows that many will now expire this year. And finally anyone reaching the age of 70 must apply to have their licence renewed in any event, and these will only last for three years. The Beak
