Coastal View & Moor News Issue 19
What’s on at the Cutty Wren every Thursday at The Duke William Skelton
I
t’s been a great 2011 at the Cutty Wren Folk Club, and I’ve no doubt
there’ll be some fi ne nights this year too. So let’s have a look:
Hopefully you will see the paper in time to rush and see a Hot Spot from John Calvert on January 19th. John’s a genuine Teesside singer-songwriter
Tony Curtiss’ Hot Spot on Dec. 8th was well-attended, and he chose to sing with his long-time colleague Brian on accordion. There were some superb songs and a great way to end the night. Unsurprisingly the Christmas Party was another busy night. (No snow to bother us this year!). The singing was fi rst-class, as was the food and the festive atmosphere. And we got plenty of folk on our “Survivor’s Night” a week later, no doubt glad to get away from the turkey sandwiches and the turkeys on the TV. who has produced some fi ne quirky and affectionate songs about our area, and he’s a natural entertainer who performs them with verve.
The next two weeks will be “Singers and Musicians” when anyone who can play or sing anything folky can come and have a go. We’re a supportive lot - come and try your hand! We’d hoped to have The Young ‘Uns on Feb 2nd, but they weren’t able to make the date, sadly. We welcome “Tattie Jam”, though, on Feb 9th. This Edinburgh duo describes themselves as “Scots trad and folk with a twist.” Since they include electric ‘cello and didgeridoo as well as guitar and mandolin, it should be a lively night. Another “Singers and Musicians” on Feb 16th, - and a few “Dates for your Diary”: local duo “Jiva” on Feb 23rd and a Theme Night of “Songs of the Season” on March 8th.
on Friday 27th April and Jez Lowe & the Bad Pennies on Friday 14th September. Ticket prices remain the same as 2010 at £11 each which includes a reserved seat. No bar is available but you are welcome to bring your own drinks, glasses and supper. Tickets are available online
