Some small steps for Nigel one giant step for Men’s Health!! T

his headline speaks volumes when we explain Nigel Malcolm’s story. Nigel first accessed the Men’s Health Clinic in April 2010, Nigel knew that his weight

was beginning to restrict his everyday life; therefore he sought help from his GP who then informed him of the new Men’s Health Drop In. Over a number of years Nigel’s weight had crept up to 29st.10lb’s. Nigel began taking part in the Weight MANagement sessions, Stadium Health Walks and the Boxercise sessions at the Men’s Health Drop In, Nigel also joined the NHS Health Improvement Services local health walks and began to attend his local gym. The ethos of the Weight MANagement programme is a slow steady weight loss of 1-2 lb’s a week by making small lifestyle changes. Nigel was encouraged to set himself small weekly goals and targets. Nigel took this on board and began making his own personal small changes, including healthy cooking, effective meal planning, reducing his portion sizes which was gained by changing the size of his plate. Not only was Nigel noticing the physical benefits of losing weight but also the psychological benefits, Nigel would agree he was not a confident man when he started the drop in, as the months progressed Nigel continued to lose a steady amount of weight and his confidence began to increase. This was not only from the weight reduction but mainly through the social support of the other men in the group and his increased skill base from his small weekly physical activity goals. Nigel is more confident and sociable to the point that his own experiences enabled him to support others to make lifestyle changes and achieve the success and confidence that he has achieved.

Nigel continues to attend the Men’s Health Drop In and NHS Health Walks. Nigel remains positive in continuing to improve his general health and well being. Nigel is now completing a FREE NHS training

course which will enable him to become a Volunteer Walk Leader. I think I speak on behalf of both the Middlesbrough Community Football staff and NHS Health Improvement staff when I say that Nigel is an inspiration to us all. Are you inspired by Nigel’s Story and would like to make changes to your lifestyle? Then come along and join us at the Men’s Health Drop In on the first

Thursday of the month from 5-8.30pm. The evening includes Stadium Walks, Weight MANagement, Cooking Skills, Fitness Circuits, Boxercise, Stop Smoking Advice and monthly campaigns including Stress Awareness, Prostate and Testicular Health. If you would like more information please contact Health Improvement on 01287 284479.
