11 Time capsule for Hummersea Hills C
oast & Country has involved Loftus youngsters in the creation of a time capsule to mark the completion of the fi rst homes in the £22m regeneration of a local housing estate.
Pupils at Hummersea Primary have created a collage depicting what they think the town will look like in 50 years’ time and also have donated items refl ecting the area’s characteristics as it is today.
The items will be placed in the capsule, which will be buried in early 2012 at a memorable location within the new housing development which is being built by national building and development specialist Southdale.
Hummersea Primary pupils have been closely involved in projects connected with the transformation of the former Westfi eld estate.
They took part in a competition to fi nd a new name for the area and were guests of honour at the housing development’s ground-breaking ceremony.
The youngsters also have interviewed local residents about what it is like to live in Loftus and a CD of this will form part of the capsule’s contents.
The burial of the capsule will mark the handover of the fi rst 123 homes, which Southdale is constructing as part of phase one of the development.
Iain Sim, Chief Executive of Coast & Country, one of the largest regeneration and housing companies in the North East, said: “Community involvement is core to all Coast & Country activities and it is important that this embraces people of all ages.
“Local children are our future, and potential residents of Hummersea Hills, so it is crucial they play an integral part in projects associated with the development. “The youngsters at Hummersea Primary are a credit to the area. They are full of

enthusiasm, are confi dent and creative and Coast & Country staff have found them a joy to work with on the various projects.” Mr Sim added: “Our partnership with Southdale will see the transformation of a community through the provision of top quality, energy effi cient, modern homes. “This will be allied with improvements in the surrounding landscape that will make a huge difference to the residents’ quality of life.” Peter Tyerman, Head teacher of Hummersea Primary, said: “We encourage our children to take an interest in the wider community and the regeneration of the former Westfi eld Estate has really captured their attention and imaginations. “They have thoroughly enjoyed being invited by Coast & Country to be involved in projects that are linked to the Hummersea
New District Commander For Redcar & Cleveland Police
R
edcar & Cleveland Police has a new District Commander, following
the retirement of Supt Chris Sadler in November 2011.
Supt Ciaron Irvine who has 17 years’ service with Cleveland Police is now at the helm.
Prior to this he was Head of Community Justice with the Force, and he has also served as Head of the Force Control Room and as Operations Chief Inspector at Redcar and Cleveland between 2007 and 2009. Supt Irvine has also worked in each of the other Districts in a variety of uniformed frontline and support roles.
Supt Irvine said: “I am delighted to take over where Chris Sadler left off, continuing the good work of police colleagues and partnership staff in making Redcar and Cleveland a safer place to live, work in and
visit.
“I am particularly happy to return and see so many familiar and friendly faces amongst my colleagues and I am grateful for their ongoing dedication and professionalism. “These are challenging times for policing, both locally and nationally, but I have every confi dence that we will continue to deliver the best possible service to the public in conjunction with our local partners. “Whilst there are tough challenges ahead, the District currently remains on target to reduce crime and we will do everything within our power to maintain that level of performance, focusing on maintaining and strengthening the links with our partners and the delivery of neighbourhood policing which is at the core of the Cleveland Police philosophy of ‘Putting People First’.”
Hills development, such as choosing a new name for the area, attending the ground- breaking ceremony and creating the time capsule.”
Paul Oldridge, Southdale North East regional director, said: “Building homes is not merely about bricks and mortar, but about improving people’s lives and neighbourhoods and creating close-knit
communities.
“Therefore, it is important we engage with and build a strong relationship with residents, both young and old.” The existing properties at Westfi eld which were not meeting the needs of contemporary lifestyles are being replaced with high quality two, three and four bedroom houses and two bedroom bungalows. The regeneration of Hummersea Hills also will involve creating a more open and accessible development with improved car parking to the homes, better road layouts and a greatly enhanced overall living environment.
The homes incorporate eco-friendly design and technology that will ensure they are energy-effi cient, have a low carbon footprint and are cost-effective for residents to run. Other benefi ts to the wider community include the creation of much needed employment and apprenticeship opportunities which Coast & Country and Southdale are providing for local people. The scheme’s fi rst phase has received £3.9m in funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). Eventually there will be homes available at Hummersea Hills for rent through Coast & Country, shared ownership through Times4Homes – the sales division of Coast & Country and for outright sale through Circa Homes, the sales division of Southdale.
